Bansko, a ski resort in Bulgaria, which popularity has recently soared, is located in the south of the country, in about 160-185 km away from Sofia and Plovdiv, at a height of over 900 m above sea level, at a foot of the beautiful Pirin mountain range, in the national park, declared by UNESCO as World Natural Heritage site. Thank to mountain surroundings, there is always long winter and guaranteed snow cover in Bansko. Mountains are predominantly of alpine character (3 peaks are over 2900m). Ski area has 17 tracks with a total length of 65 kilometers. There are tracks for all categories from simple for beginners, to challenging for experienced sportsmen. For skilled skiers and professionals, the location of trails allows to combine routes, passing through plots of different categories of complexity and steepness. Trails are located in 3 ski areas of Bansko. Shiligarnika (1700-2500m), the highest, is under Todorini Vruh (2746m) peak. There are tracks for competitions in slalom and giant slalom. The lower is Chalin Valog (1100-1600m) and the third ski area is Banderishka valley. Trails for beginners are in Chalin Valog and Shiligarnika areas. Everyone desired will be invited to come down to the town on skis or snowboard. A well-equipped ski track with length of 16 km, passing through the forest is laid there. Recently, on the last 7 km. of this route series of snow cannons and lighting for night skiing were established. A new route near Bynderishskoy glade is also equipped with lighting for night skiing. In this area there are also trails for cross-country skiing with a total length of 5 km. (1530 m above sea level). This area is suitable for biathlon. Ski zone of Bansko has the most modern elevators. The start station of the gondola elevator is in 2,5 km from the city center. From each hotel runs a minibus to the bottom of lift station. In Bansko there is the longest ski season in Bulgaria, steady snow and heavy snowfalls. To increase the length of the ski season, even at a temperature of plus 5 degrees, various methods, including modern snow cannons, are used. For beginners ten children elevators and moving walkways, which are very popular among children, are offered. Kindergarten is organized for the youngest skiers. There they can enjoy ski tracks, carousel and other amusements.
Bansko has an excellent ski school for both adults and children aged from 8 to 12 years, a snowboard school (since 12 years). Small family hotels are available here in abundance. They guarantee to its guests personal service, local cuisine, warm, informal contacts.
Bansko is not only ski resort, but also a cultural center, attracting with cultural monuments, museums, houses with wall paintings and wood carvings (more than 100), a permanent ethnographic exhibition and the exhibition of icons from the Bansko school of icon painting. It is interesting to visit the ancient church of the Holy Trinity, standing out for its thirty-metre tower, magnificent murals and carved wooden iconostasis (XIX century) and observe the Holy Virgin Church (XIV century). In free time walking through the city center will bring you a great pleasure.
