Plovdiv is magically beautiful in all seasons. In winter, it is extraordinarily white, in spring is covered with greenery and flowers, in summer - completely unrealistic because of incredible Thracian heat, autumn is calm and sad with grapes on soft stems.
Plovdiv is situated along the Maritza river with its slow flow and plenty of picturesque hills on shores. It belongs to the south-central part of Bulgaria. Remains of ancient, medieval, and modern culture coexist in this city. Rome is much younger than Plovdiv. Athens, Constantinople also appeared later. Plovdiv - Thracian and classical Greek city, the pride of Philip of Macedon, the capital under the authority of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine center, a stronghold of the Bulgarians, a dream of the crusaders - magnificent and rich.
Today Plovdiv is preserved as the unique architectural ensemble, located on three hills. The Bulgarians are proud that Old Plovdiv was restored and preserved as a large outdoor museum for future generations. Today it is an autonomous region within the modern city. It is declared as an architectural museum with more than 150 monuments of culture. Beautiful houses are turned into museums, galleries, restaurants. There are also artists' studios and wood carvers workshops. The most striking examples of Baroque buildings in Plovdiv: the Museum of Ethnography, the House of Nedkovich (the Municipality), The House of writers.
In the modern city there are two mosques - the Djumaya Mosque and the Imaret Mosque, left over from the Ottoman Empire. Very impressive are ruins of a Roman amphitheater (length of 180 meters), designed for 30,000 spectators. Ruins, a part of the Trimontium acropolis, built by the Romans back in the II century, were restored and concerts and theater festivals are still take place there. In addition, Plovdiv is home to various art festivals and the annual International Fair, the largest events in the Balkans.
