Select the country and object's type Karl Friedrich Schinkel: Major exhibition in Berlin Package holiday for all Schinkel fans

Schinkel – Architect, Artist and Designer. His buildings shape the centre of Berlin. He designed stage sets, and was an interior designer for Wilhelm III. The Kupferstichkabinett in Potsdamer Platz is currently exhibiting more than 300 of his works in “Schinkel. History and Poetry“. His stage designs are the highlight of this exhibition. They are delicate exhibits at which visitors can rarely marvel. Everyone can now follow in his footsteps with the “Schinkel in Berlin“ package which includes hotel, ticket for public transport and ticket for the exhibition.

Schinkel and Berlin: His architectural footprint

There is hardly another architect who has shaped the cityscape in the centre of Berlin quite like Schinkel. If one strolls along the grand boulevard Unter den Linden, the Neue Wache (New Guard House) catches one’s eye. On the way to Berlin Cathedral, one crosses the Schlossbrücke (Palace Bridge) – it connects the city centre with Spree Island. One marvels at the antique collection in the Altes Museum, another one of Schinkel’s designs. Even if one is enjoying a play in the Konzerthaus (Concert Hall) in Gendarmenmarkt, one is surrounded by Schinkel‘s architecture.

More than an architect

What few people know: Schinkel was also an artist, interior designer and set designer. For Mozart‘s “Magic Flute“, he painted the starry firmament for the Queen of the Night – an impressive midnight blue sky of stars. ”The Fire of Moscow” ranks among his most famous works – a diorama which impressively presents the fire in the Russian city of tsars. As an interior designer, Schinkel was responsible for the interior furnishings of Friedrich Wilhelm III’s apartment. His style: simple and elegant with lots of white marble.

Schinkel‘s works in the Kupferkabinett

Up until January 6th, 2013, the State Museum’s Kupferstichkabinett exhibition will feature around 300 exhibits of this eclectic man. It represents a small part of the extensive collection of around 5000 pieces which the museum houses. His stage designs rank among the highlights. They are delicate exhibits at which visitors can rarely marvel. The museum offers workshops for young visitors in addition to guided tours and lectures. On four Thursday evenings, experts exchange ideas about the Prussian architect – including exciting background information.
