Piran is a town and municipality in southwestern Slovenia on the Adriatic coast along the Gulf of Piran. This part of the country was part of the Venetian empire from the late 13th century to the end of the 18th century. The municipality is bilingual, both Slovenian and Italian are official languages.
The town has preserved the medieval layout with narrow streets and compact houses, which rise in steps from the coastal lowland into the hills and give the whole area a typical Mediterranean look. Its serried buildings, typically stone and Mediterranean are encircled by city walls. The city was fortified in the 7th century and the walls were strengthened in the 16th century to protect against raids from Turkey. History is reflected in the shining marble of Tartini Square in all its richness of colours and exciting expectation. Tartini Square is where the lively and important events of the coming week are announced by the Mayor’s Herald in his colorful historical costume. Features include the Piran civic museum and Piran maritime museum.
But the city has much more to offer than just history. It is great place for people who love the outdoors, and the beaches are in great shape. There are beaches, hotels, restaurants, sports facilities, and casino.
