Meteora is the unique monastic state among majestic rocky landscape - many monasteries on stone pillars. Four monasteries and two nunneries are open for visitors now

"Meteor" means "floating in clouds” in Greek. This is the unique monastic state, which arose among majestic rocky landscape - many monasteries on stone pillars. Monasteries, built on tops of rocks, represent finest examples of Byzantine art. Here is the heart and the soul of Greece.
Once, all peaks, caves and rock shelters in the Metéora were used for hermitages and monasteries. Now there are eight valid monasteries, six of which are open for visitors: four male and two female. The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is less frequently visited by tourists than others, because of difficulties with parking, but, like the others, is open from 9.00 to 18.00, with a 2-hour break. Each monastery has “not reception "days when visits to the monastery for guests is prohibited. However, in any day of a week there is a possibility to see at least some of the Meteora monasteries. In some monasteries, a small entrance fee is taken for maintenance of museums and work of secular stuff.
Note! Visiting monasteries is permitted only in clothing befitting the occasion: women - skirt below knees and blouse with sleeves, men - in trousers and shirt.
