Magnesia is a birthplace of mythological heroes Jason, Peleus and his son Achilles. The capital of the ancient Thessaly and the modern district of Magnesia - Volos, lies on the shore of the Pagasetic Gulf and is one of major Greek commercial ports. Most of ancient Greek monuments of the city have not reach our days, but nevertheless, it has enough attractions – among them are churches St-Constantine, St Nicolau, Metamorfosis (Transfiguration) and Aghios Triadas (Holy Trinity) in Anavros district, the Archaeological Museum and old miniature train, which make regular trips to picturesque slopes of Mount Pelion, which, according to a legend, was inhabited by centaurs in old days. There are many beautiful resorts at Magnesia peninsula - Horefto, Kissos, Tsangarad, Milopotamos etc. This district also includes the islands of the Sporades group, almost the entire northern part of which is the National Marine Park. Famous Euboea (Evia), the second largest island of the country, is famous for its thermal springs, cozy little beach with pure sand and numerous karst caves.
