Most tourists, visiting Kythira prefer to stay in Kapsali - a tourist center at the south end of the island, a picturesque place, situated between two sandy bays beneath the walls of the impressive Venetian fortress of Hora (13th century)

Kythira is one of the Greek Ionian islands of the Aegean Sea. The island is located in a place where the Aegean Sea meets the Ionian. Kythira is one of the main centers of worship of Aphrodite - a popular holiday destination of the Athenians. On the island there are many beautiful secluded beaches and tourist attractions. However, one should rent a car or scooter to explore the island properly, as public transport on Kythira is absent. Most tourists, visiting Kythira prefer to stay in Kapsali - a tourist center at the south end of the island, a picturesque place, situated between two sandy bays beneath the walls of the impressive Venetian fortress of Hora (13 th century), the island's capital. In order to get from Kapsali to Hora, one should have to climb up steep stairs for two kilometers, but a stunning view, opening from the top for the harbor and the island of Avgo, a legendary birthplace of the goddess of love Aphrodite, is a reward for an effort. To the north-west of Hora, there are three monasteries, worth a visit. A ruined medieval capital of the island – Paleohora, built at a gorge’s bottom, was protected from three sides by steep 100-metre cliffs. This city-fortress, invisible from the sea, was built to protect the island from pirates. However, was discovered and destroyed in 1537.
