
The temple was built in the days of Thailand's ancient capital of Ayutthaya.
The Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn is named after Aruna, the Indian God of Dawn. Wat Arun is one of the most striking river bank landmarks of Thailand. Despite the name, the most spectacular view of the sparkling monument can be seen from the east side of the river at sunset, when the summits of Wat Arun make a significant silhouette against the skyline. The outstanding feature of Wat Arun is its central prang (Khmer-style tower). Steep steps lead to the two terraces. The central prang is symbolizing mount Meru of the Indian cosmology. The satellite prangs are dedicated to the wind god Phra Phai. Around the base of the central prang are various statues of ancient Chinese soldiers and creatures. Over the second terrace are four figures of the Hindu god Indra riding on Erawan.
