Founded as the capital of Thailand in 1782, Bangkok is a main economic and financial center of Southeast Asia and has one of the fastest rates in the world for construction of skyscrapers.
All visitors shouldn’t miss fabulous palaces, historic temples and museums such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun and Wat Pho, Vimanmek Palace, the National Museum and others. A visit to Ratanakosin Island and a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River let you try the traditional Thai lifestyle. Seeing Nakhon Pathom, which hosts the world's tallest Buddhist monument, is also attractive. Ratchaburi, for the famous floating market and Kanchanaburi, home of beautiful waterfalls and mountains are two attractive destinations. And, of course, everybody should visit Ayutthaya, the Thailand's capital in past times.
Bangkok also features numerous shopping centres and traditional markets. Tourists can choose among luxurious department stores in the Ratchaprasong, Siam Square, Silom, and Sukhumvit areas, or try their skill in bargaining in open-air markets such as Chatuchak Weekend Market, Banglampoo, or Chinatown. The high relative humidity and warm temperature support the growth of tropical plants — one can find exotic orchids and delicious fruit everywhere. Cyclists can use theirs bicycle to explore parks, temple complexes, markets.
