Next year, Frankfurt am Main will once again be attracting visitors from around the world with an exciting range of special events. Whether it’s a top-class sporting highlight, an international art exhibition or a traditional folk fair, the Main metropolis has something for absolutely everyone. What’s more, the city’s existing establishments are continuing to expand their offer range, thus increasing the entertainment opportunities available to locals and visitors alike.

The renowned Stдdel Museum, for example, will be opening a brand-new underground exhibition hall in February of 2012. This magnificent new chamber, sunlit thanks to its circular skylights, will be serving as the new home of the Stдdel’s vast collection of contemporary art.

A spectacular Jeff Koons exhibition will provide yet another Frankfurt event highlight. Conceived in co-operation with the artist, the Liebieghaus Sculpture Museum and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt will be putting this unique exhibition on show during the summer of 2012. Jeff Koons ranks amongst the world’s most influential and celebrated creators of contemporary art. While the Liebieghaus will be displaying a comprehensive range of his most significant sculptures, the Schirn will be focusing on the lesser known artworks of Jeff Koons, a first here in Germany. Together with the exhibition at the Schirn, the sculpture collection on display at the historical Liebieghaus villa and in its surrounding gardens will represent the largest Koons exhibition ever to have been assembled.

Frankfurt will also be hosting three special art-themed events in 2012. From 15th to 20th April, the Main metropolis will once again find itself under the spotlight with the Luminale 12 coming to town. Running parallel to “Light+Building”, the leading international architecture and technology fair, this night-time event will be illuminating a variety of structures throughout the city by way of special light shows and projections. Shuttle busses will be in operation during the Luminale, ferrying participants from site to site. Special presentations and activities on the subject of light and illumination will be on offer at many of the buildings taking part in the event. Only a week later, on 21st April 2012, Frankfurt will be welcoming the return of the very popular Museum Night. Here, over 40 museums and a similar number of art galleries will be joining up to present a spectacular art and culture programme lasting well into the early morning hours. Aside from the exhibitions themselves, the event will also feature special guided tours, live music, dance and theatre performances, readings, workshops, parties and plenty of international cuisine. A special shuttle bus service, taking event participants to and from the participating venues, will be operating until 2:00 am absolutely free of charge. Finally, on the last weekend in August, it will be time once again for the annual Museum Embankment Festival. This spectacular open-air celebration, taking place from 24th to 26th August, is without a doubt the cultural highlight of the

year. With this festival, Frankfurt pays tribute to its magnificent museums, which will be offering visitors of all ages a colourful range of programmes on show late into the night. Meanwhile, the festival’s riverside fringe programme, consisting of music, international cuisine and countless live performances, will turn this unique cultural celebration into a truly memorable experience.

Friends of choral sounds are urged to pay a visit to the German Choir Festival 2012, scheduled to take place at various downtown locations from 07th to 10th June 2012. More than 400 choirs with over 20,000 singers will be coming together in the Main metropolis for this celebration of song, performing on special stages, in churches, outdoors, at sing-along concerts and in the equally popular choral competition and at “Choir Night”.

The Apple Wine Festival is another of Frankfurt’s many traditional celebrations, held in the heart of the city between 10th and 19th August 2012. Few outsiders are aware that Frankfurt’s apple wine culture has been playing an important role in the city’s urban life for hundreds of years. At this festival, which also features an excellent stage programme, people come together from near and far to celebrate the locals’ beverage of choice. Although typical Frankfurt apple wine – made from time-honoured apple varieties – is the mainstay of the festival’s drinks menu, there are also trendy mixed blends and apple wine cocktails on offer to quench the thirst.

Frankfurt is also a city of sport, with many first-class events held here throughout the year. The IRONMAN European Championships, for example, will be returning to Frankfurt and the surrounding region on 08th July 2012. Urged on by tens of thousands of spectators, some 3,000 participants will once again be concluding the gruelling race at the Rцmerberg, which Chris McCormack, the 2008 champion, referred to as nothing less than “the world’s most beautiful finish line.” This competition is followed in autumn by Germany’s oldest city marathon, run on 28th October 2012. The BMW Frankfurt Marathon is well known for its ability to get runners and spectators in the right mood with an excellent fringe programme consisting of live music, street festivals and a popular children’s programme.

The year ends, as always, with the traditional Frankfurt Christmas Market. This time-honoured yuletide celebration, held on the Rцmerberg from 26th November to 22nd December 2012, represents one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets. Visitors come from near and far to enjoy a glass of hot apple wine, to stroll amongst the many stalls and booths and to take in the special Christmas atmosphere exuded by this wonderful market.
