FITUR 2014 Will Host the Presentation Ceremony for the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism

The decision to stage the presentation ceremony within the framework of FITUR represents an important form of recognition on the part of the World Tourism Organisation regarding the work that is carried out by the trade fair

Madrid, 29th May 2013.- The 34th staging of the International Tourism Trade Fair, FITUR 2014, will provide the setting for the presentation of the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism for the first time. These prestigious awards are presented each year by the UNWTO and their presentation at the trade fair clearly confirms the World Tourism Organisation\'s recognition of FITUR\'s importance. The ceremony will take place on 22nd January next, the first day of the show, which is due to be staged by IFEMA between 22nd and 26th January 2014 at its facilities at FERIA DE MADRID.

Since the first Awards were granted in 2003, the UNWTO has recognised the contributions made to the field of tourism by experts and organisations, both public and private and NGO\'s, through innovative initiatives, especially those relating to communications within the tourist industry, the creation of revolutionary online management tools and the implementation of projects designed to combat poverty through the realm of tourism. These Awards contribute to the achievement of one of the UNWTO\'s objectives, namely that of promoting tourism as a means of ensuring sustainable development and international dissemination through innovative know-how and initiatives.

Following the staging of the Awards Ceremony on 22nd January 2014, the UNWTO will also organise its Knowledge Network Symposium (on 23rd January) within the framework of FITUR 2014.
