Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the youngest federal states of Germany. It was founded in 1946 by combining several West-German lands, located in the French occupation zone. It has borders with North Rhine-Westphalia - to the north, Hessen - to the east, Saarland and France - to the south-west, Baden-Wuerttemberg – to the south-east, as well as with Belgium and Luxembourg - to the west. Capital is the city of Mainz. Free Cities (Kreisfreie Städte) of Rhineland-Palatinate: Mainz, Koblenz, Ludwigshafen, Kaiserslautern, Frankenthal, Landau in der Pfalz, Neustadt (Weinstrasse), Pirmasens, Speyer, Trier, Worms, Zweibrücken.
Rhineland-Palatinate’s landscapes are predominantly hilly and mountainous. This is the largest forest region of Germany, and its healing mineral springs attract tourists from all over the world to resorts of Bad Neuenahr, Bad Ems and Bad Bertrich. Gems industry is highly developed in the region of Idar- Oberstein. To the south is located Palatinate wine region. Here lies the famous 85 miles "Wine Way". Along the way, are located the ancient cities of Worms and Speyer, famous with well preserved magnificent imperial cathedrals listed in World Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO.
Rhineland-Palatinate amazes tourists with extraordinary diversity. This is not surprising, because its members are not historically linked. Numerous dialects of different regions have survived here, as well as more than 500 palaces and castles, many of which are under protection of UNESCO.
