The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the latter being the source of most of the Nile's water and fertile soil. The Nile and its tributaries flow though several countries. The White Nile flows though Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt. The Blue Nile starts in Ethiopia. Before the construction of the Aswan High Dam; the Nile rolled through a series of six rapids, called cataracts, between northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Since construction of the dam, the river has gradually changed its course.
The Nile is truly the River of Life and has been revered in Egypt since ancient times. Only 6% of Egypt is cultivated. Nearly all habitation owes its existence to the narrow strip of land either side of the river itself or to the very fertile Nile Delta in the north. The Nile teems with life. Many different types of animals, birds, and fish all call the Nile River home. Hundreds of years ago, even hippos and lions could be found here in the Nile Valley. At present Nile Crocodiles are the most remarkable for travellers.
The Nile River played a crucial role in the founding of Egyptian civilization. The Egyptians were able to cultivate wheat and crops around the Nile, providing food for the general population. The Nile playing a major role in politics and social life was a source of spiritual dimension. The Egyptians created a god dedicated to the welfare of the Nile’s annual inundation. The god’s name was Hapi, and both he and the pharaoh were thought to control the flooding of the Nile River. The Nile contributed much to civilization’s lasting three thousand years.
