Egypt is a connecting-link between Africa, Asia and Europe. Egypt borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and the Gaza Strip and Israel to the east. The northern coast borders the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Cyprus; the eastern coast borders the Red Sea. Most of the country lies within the wide band of desert. Despite covering a small part of the country, the Nile Valley and Delta are the most important regions, being cultivable regions and supporting about 99% of the population. Following the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt became important world transportation hub. However, the country fell into debt to European countries. As a result, Great Britain seized control of Egypt's government in 1882 to protect its financial interests. Constant revolting by the Egyptian people persuaded the United Kingdom to issue a declaration of Egypt's independence on February 22, 1922. The Egyptian Republic was declared on 18 June 1953, with General Muhammad Naguib as the first President of the Republic. The tourism in Egypt appeared near two thousands years ago. The ancient Greeks and Romans visited it for looking at Egyptian temples and tombs.
