Diageo & Value Cabs Commit to support BVCB

Diageo NI has committed £1m to support Belfast’s tourism growth in 10 years

Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau (BVCB) has announced that global drinks company, Diageo Northern Ireland will continue to invest in Belfast’s vibrant tourism and hospitality sector for another year. Over the past decade, Diageo NI has contributed more that £1m in sponsorship to BVCB which demonstrates Diageo NI’s on-going commitment to the regeneration of Belfast and in showcasing the city at a local and global level.

Belfast Giants secured a first class sponsorship with Harp Lager which will see the two organisations team up throughout the 2012/2013 ice hockey season. The partnership will see Northern Ireland’s Number 1 Lager – Harp support the Giants by hosting a number of ‘Giant Talk’ supporters’ events in pubs across Northern Ireland as well as looking after home and away fans throughout the season.

Value Cabs drives tourism with new BVCB deal

Value Cabs has signed a new sponsorship deal which sees Belfast’s biggest taxi company lend its support to Belfast Visitor & Convention Bureau’s efforts to drive tourism growth to the city for a further three year period.

The innovative family-owned company – Northern Ireland’s largest with more than 600 vehicles in its fleet – has been a strategic partner of BVCB for the last decade and this 3 year deals confirms their continued commitment to support BVCB’s promotional efforts to increase tourist numbers, conference wins and cruise ship arrivals to Belfast until the end of 2015.

New Christmas \"Famously Festive\" Campaign launched

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson joined Anne McMullan, BVCB & Joe Jordan, Belfast Chamber of Trade & Commerce to launch a new £250,000 \"Famously Festive\" Christmas campaign.

The festive campaign promotes Belfast\'s unique and distinctive retail, hospitality and entertainment scenes to visitors across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the run-up to Christmas.

The 6 week campaign is delivered in partnership with DSD, Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Victoria Square, Castle Court, Titanic Belfast and Translink and includes TV, radio, outdoor, press, digital, tactical marketing and integrated PR highlighting the abundance of products and value offerings including retail, family attractions, eating out, entertainment and value city breaks.

BVCB\'s joint campaign with Easyjet

BVCB\'s co-operative campaign developed in partnership with Tourism Ireland and Easyjet is currently live in the GB market. The £200,000 campaign is focused in 5 key cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham. The regional press campaign went live on 19th November for a 4 week period focusing on key messages including Belfast City Breaks; Belfast’s Titanic year; entertainment, shopping and warmth of welcome, only in Belfast and supported with online and targeted email activity to contacts on Easyjet’s regional databases.

BVCB\'s Destination Showcase (London) & Web/ Digital Member Day

Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau ‘Little Belfast’ showcase event – The Brewery, London

Over 30 BVCB members from across the tourism and hospitality industry descended in London on 15 November to showcase Belfast as a leading conference destination as BVCB hosted its annual showcase at The Brewery in the city. The event, sponsored by Titanic Belfast, Tourism Ireland and supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, marks the end of a landmark year for business tourism development in the city including the opening of Titanic Belfast, the announcement of a £20m extension to the Belfast waterfront and new product investments such as the MAC , The Crumlin Road Gaol and the opening of SS Nomadic due to take place early next year.

70 clients attended the event including association conference organisers, PCO’s and event buyers. Also at the showcase were clients who had recently confirmed Belfast as a location for their conference including the Association of Surgeons in Training which is planning its 2014 event in the city and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law which held its ‘UNCLOS at 30’ event in Belfast this month. At the event, buyers got the chance to sample the finest local produce by our celebrity chefs and finalists from the ‘Great British Menu’ series, sample a uniquely Belfast cocktail which ‘Lady Guinness’ and be entertained by the Belfast Community Gospel Choir.

The event was held as part of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau plans to win 70% more conference business in this financial year and grow business tourism across the city. Since 1st April, BVCB has secured 33 conference wins for Belfast worth £18m to the local economy.

BVCB\'s Web & Digital Day

BVCB hosted a Digital Day event for members on Friday 23 November at Belfast City Hall. The event, supported by Belfast City Council, focused on how businesses can utilise web and digital marketing channels for business growth and customer engagement.

Speakers from Google, local digital company, Blue Cube Interactive, University of Ulster and Belfast City Council showcased presentations on topics including best practice digital marketing, social media and the new Super-connected Belfast programme. Click to download speaker presentations.

Global tourism leader hails Belfast’s success in his first visit to the city

BVCB and Titanic Quarter hosted a visit to Belfast this month by Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to showcase the landmark tourism development that has taken place in the city. As part of his visit, Taleb met with representatives from the local tourism industry and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness to discuss international trends and opportunities for Belfast tourism.

Tourism Ireland Jump into Ireland West Coast Showcase

BVCB attended the 3 city (San Francisco, Los Angeles and Vancouver) showcase under the Cruise Ireland banner to focus attention on Belfast and Northern Ireland as a growing cruise destination. In total 240 travel agents and media professionals were presented-to, allowing destination representatives to showcase their products.

USA Cruise Operator Sales Calls

Marketing the Cruise Belfast initiative, BVCB and Belfast Harbour covered 4 cities from Fortt Lauderdale, Miami, Los Angeles and Seattle meeting the cruise decision makers and itinerary planners to promote and present Belfast as a destination for the 2014 and 2015 cruise season.

BVCB at Seatrade Med Marseille

BVCB attended the Seatrade Med exhibition at Marseille with Cruise Belfast partners Belfast Harbour on a shared Cruise Ireland / Cruise Wales stand. The exhibition provided the opportunity to market Belfast as a cruise destination for the 2014 and 2015 seasons to European cruise executives representing TUI, Ponant, Carnival, Cunard, P&O, Aida, Kristina, Saga, Fred Olsen and US Cruise Operators including Princess, Seabourn, Windstar and Royal Caribbean.

Nine in a Line! Belfast Welcome Centre wins Best TIC Award!

Belfast Welcome Centre has earned one of Northern Ireland’s tourism industry’s top titles in a year which has seen the city’s tourism fortunes transformed.

Belfast Welcome Centre, which operates from three key locations – at Donegall Place in Belfast City Centre and at Belfast’s two main airports – is managed by Belfast Visitor & Convention Bureau (BVCB).

For the ninth straight year, the Belfast Welcome Centre has been named ‘Best Tourist Information Centre’ at the annual Northern Ireland Travel and Tourism Awards, which recognise the contributions made by key players within the industry.

Celebrating their latest award success were Mary Jo McCanny and Eileen Johnston, Belfast Welcome Centre, together with Alderman Christopher Stalford, Belfast City Council and Ross Fothergill, NITB.

Belfast named one of Europe\'s Top 10 Destinations On The Rise

Belfast has made a list of Europe\'s top 10 fastest-growing travel destinations according to Tripadvisor\'s Travellers Choice Destinations On The Rise. The city was ranked eighth in the table, with Kiev in Ukraine finishing top. TripAdvisor\'s website said: \"Belfast has grown into a cosmopolitan destination and become a popular weekend break spot. With feelings of optimism and life pulsing through the city, Belfast makes for an energising getaway.\" The website highlighted Belfast\'s \"award-winning\" restaurants, bars, clubs, galleries and theatres. Other UK destinations in the European top 10 included Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow.

Awards Accolades & Achievements

RISE sculpture wins its first international award

RISE – the landmark public artwork on Belfast`s Broadway Roundabout – has won its first international design award. The 37.5 metre high sculpture – by the Nottingham artist Wolfgang Buttress – won the `Small Projects` category at the annual Institution of Structural Engineer` Structural Awards, which were presented in London on 2 November.

Other winners included the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, the Al-hamra Firdous Tower in Kuwait, the redevelopment of King`s Cross Station in London, the Jarrold Bridge in Norwich, the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas, the VanDusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver, Tunbridge Wells Hospital and the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The Peace Bridge in Derry/Londonderry was also commended in its category.

£1.7m arrivals lounge opens at George Best Belfast City Airport

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson has officially opened a £1.7 million international arrivals lounge at George Best Belfast City Airport. The private investment significantly enhances capacity of the arrivals areas and provides statutory agencies with improved facilities to process international passengers when Aer Lingus begin flights to and from Palma, Malaga and Faro in March 2013.

Belfast wins IBM Smarter Cities Challenge Grant

Belfast has become the first city on the island of Ireland and only the third ever in the UK to be selected to receive a prestigious IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant. A total of 100 cities from 400 applicants around the world were awarded the grant - worth an estimated $400,000 – which will provide Belfast City Council with access to some of IBM`s top experts to analyse and recommend ways Belfast can become an even better place in which to live, work, visit and invest. The successful Belfast bid follows on the announcement two months ago that the city is to receive £13.7 million as part of the UK Government`s Super-connected Cities project will make it one of the world’s leading digital cities as part of the council`s city Investment Programme.

173,000 visitors bite into Belfst\'s big MAC

Since opening in April, The MAC has welcomed 173,000 visitors, almost double the expected footfall number for the centre\'s first year in operation. Footfall measures the number of punters coming through the doors to enjoy the range of exhibitions and shows on offer, as well as Canteen at The MAC.

McHugh\'s Bar in Belfast has won the award for \"Most nnovative Pub\" at the Pubs of Ulster Pub of The Year Awards 2012

Bangor & Hillsborough Pubs amongst those named in prestigious Michelin guide

Eight pubs in Northern Ireland have been listed among the best in the UK and Ireland for grabbing some grub, according to the prestigious Michelin Eating Out in Pubs 2009 guide to the UK and Ireland. Among those listed on the prestigious guide — which has been running for five years — was Grace Neill’s and Pier 36, which are both in Donaghadee. Coyle’s in Bangor, the Distiller’s Arms in Bushmills and The Pheasant in Anahilt were also named as among the best pubs to eat in. The Buck’s Head Inn and the Mourne Seafood Bar, both in Dundrum, and The Plough Inn in Hillsborough were also featured in the guide.

Titanic plan at Titanic Belfast

The world\'s most expensive Titanic artefact has gone on public display in Titanic Belfast. The 32ft-long plan of the ship, which was used as a reference guide during the 1912 British inquiry into the sinking, has been passed to Titanic Belfast by a mystery benefactor. The anonymous collector bought the well-preserved paper diagram at auction for £220,000 last year. It bears ink marks denoting exactly where engineers giving evidence to the Board of Trade inquiry determined the White Star Line vessel had struck the iceberg on its fateful transatlantic maiden voyage in April 1912.

Crumlin Road Gaol Visitor & Convention Centre Opens to the Public

The Crumlin Road Gaol is a nineteenth century Grade ‘A’ listed building which has recently undergone a significant restoration and its doors are now re-opening once again in November, but, this time, to the public. Take the tour and live life behind bars, in a history that begins when the Gaol opened in 1845, and find out first hand how a Victorian prison evolved through history. During its time in service 17 people were executed, numerous escapes were undertaken and many infamous inmates were detained in it. An estimated 25,000 people were imprisoned there and both history buffs and architecture fans will find the tour, which comprises a qualified guide exploring the prison and covers all aspects of the Gaol from the Tunnel linking the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin Road to the Hanging Cell while also taking in the Historic Holding Cells, Governors Office, Centre Circle, C-Wing, Hospital and Graveyard on the way, particularly fascinating.

Refurbished Rooftop Garden & Pop Up Alpine Lodge at The Merchant Hotel

The Merchant Hotel has announced the imminent re-launch of its roof top garden. A bespoke retractable glass roof is currently being added to the existing roof garden at an investment of just over £100,000. This state-of-the-art roof will allow guests to enjoy Belfast’s only Roof Garden, with panoramic views of the city, all year round - no matter what the weather. This unique space (with a capacity for 60 people for drinks receptions) is a suitable venue for product launches, private parties, fashion shows.

In celebration of the renovation of its Roof Garden The Merchant Hotel is launching a Pop-up Rooftop Alpine Lodge which will be available to book for private parties of 40 or more from the 1st of December until the end of February. Christmas in Belfast 2012

Belfast\'s festivities and markets help city light up for Christmas

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson, was joined by UTV\'s Julian Simmons, Barazina Youth Choir, panto stars and children\'s favourites, the ZingZillas, The Belfast Christmas Market opened filled with stalls of crafts and food from all over Europe.

Also on the grounds of the City Hall is the Santa\'s Postbox - with a personal reply promised for every child who posts a letter to Father Christmas. The City Hall Christmas tree is a 15 metre Norwegian spruce from Pubble Forest in Tempo, Co Fermanagh. The Belfast Christmas Market will remain open until Thursday 20 December.

St George\'s Christmas Craft Fair takes place from Friday 7 - Sunday 9 December. Products on sale include chocolates, homemade jams and chutneys, crafts, toys, home decorations, scented candles. St George\'s Market will be opening its doors for additional trading in the run up to Christmas. As well as the usual weekend opening hours, the market will also be open on the following dates:Monday 17 – Wednesday 19 December, 4pm – 9pm

Christmas Support Package for Shoppers and Traders

The package of measures to encourage shoppoers to come into their city centres and help money go further has been announced.

Expanded Park and Ride Services for Belfast, Lisburn, Newry and Londonderry. These Park and Ride services will operate on each evening when there is late night shopping and all day on Saturdays with the last service leaving the city centre 30 minutes after the shops close. These services will operate until Saturday 22 December.

Free Park and Ride Services after 4.30pm on weekdays and all day each Saturday. For these 5 weeks, each of the Park and Ride services listed above will provide free parking and bus travel for people travelling into the city after 4.30 pm on the weekdays when late night shopping is in place and all day each Saturday.

Reduced Saturday Metro Fares: Translink currently offers a promotional day ticket for £2 offering unlimited travel on Metro services in Belfast after 09:30 on Saturdays. This promotion will be extended until 5 January 2013.

Embargo on Road Works on strategic routes in the Greater Belfast area until after Christmas; this applies to works carried out by Roads Service and the utilities with the exception of emergency works.

Increasing train capacity: The majority of train services operating between Belfast and Coleraine will be increased from 3-carriage to 6-carriage services.

Additional late night Christmas shopping train: An additional late night Christmas shopping train will be introduced from Great Victoria Street Station to Coleraine, departing Belfast at 22:08 (Monday to Saturday). This service will operate until Saturday 22 December.
