Tourism for Tomorrow – no longer just the WTTC Awards brand!

The World Travel & Tourism Council is redefining sustainability to exemplify the brand of “Tourism for Tomorrow”.

WTTC has elevated the brand long associated with its Awards to one of its three strategic priorities which also include Policies for Growth and Freedom to Travel.

During World Travel Market, London, WTTC will be launching ‘Leading Tourism for Tomorrow’ which articulates its vision for the sustainable development of the industry built on achieving the balance between ‘people, planet and profits’. The document sets our foundation for all of WTTC’s future work in this area.

Leading Tourism for Tomorrow recognises that in order to maximise the sustainable growth potential of Travel & Tourism, the industry must ensure that benefits are created for consumers, businesses, local people and the environment alike. The vision goes beyond ‘green’ issues in Travel & Tourism and encompasses human resources development, solid relationships with host communities, environmental protection with the preservation of tourism assets. For there to be the opportunity for future generations to benefit from the experience of travel, we have to adopt a holistic view for the future, putting aside short term gains to focus on the longer term horizon.

We will be sharing other key highlights from this leadership position in the next edition of this newsletter. We would welcome your feedback.

The Conservation Foundation relaunches as The TreadRight Foundation

The Travel Corporation is excited to relaunch their philanthropic arm, The Conservation Foundation, as The TreadRight Foundation (www.treadright.org).

A branch of The Travel Corporation devoted to providing financial assistance to sustainable tourism projects on a global level, the newly named TreadRight Foundation has committed more than $1.5 million US to conservation projects since 2008.

For half a decade, The Conservation Foundation had grown from its philanthropic roots to become the hub for The Travel Corporation’s plethora of sustainable tourism efforts spanning its numerous travel brands, including Trafalgar, Contiki Holidays and Uniworld. Current TreadRight efforts include providing support to the development of a best practice guide for the environmental performance of river cruise operations, sponsoring future environmental leaders with Contiki and the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership fund, and supporting Britain’s National Trust appeal to safeguard the iconic White Cliffs of Dover.

The Travel Corporation’s culture of sustainability is prevalent throughout the company on all levels, but its formative roots come from the top. “The TreadRight Foundation represents the way forward for us,” says The Travel Corporation President and CEO Brett Tollman. “TreadRight will build on The Conservation Foundation’s culture of giving and more deeply address our own efforts at becoming the most responsible travel business we can be.\"

The tourism industry changed my life - Fair Trade Tourism - making a difference

Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa shares a story about Jason Arends, an employee at Stormsriver Adventures, a company that has embraced Fair Trade Tourism practises.

The story shows how Fair Trade in Tourism benefits real people working in South Africa’s tourism industry. For tourists, the Fair Trade Tourism initiative offers a possibility to extend their ethical purchase decisions beyond everyday products to also include holidays that guarantee a better life for people in South Africa.

Born and bred in Port Elizabeth, nature was not part of Jason Arend’s life. Nice times, parties and the wrong friends were. He did a short stint in the St Albans prison, but made it through and came out alive. That was the point where Jason decided to change his life for the better. He wanted to move away from PE, so Jason and his girlfriend moved to her mother’s house in Tsitsikamma. Jason’s future mother-in-law organised a job for him at Stormsriver Adventures during the summer holidays, where he attended a canopy tour safety guide training and became a qualified safety guide. This is when he fell in love with nature and guiding. Time flew, the summer holiday passed and Jason found himself jobless again. But eventually, through much perseverance, he managed to get a position in maintenance at Stormsriver. \"I knew I had to grab this chance with both hands so I did everything to the best of my abilities.\"

Another chance came along when Jason was afforded the opportunity to attend a Field Guide course. With support from the Stormsriver management and an inspiring mentor, Jason successfully completed the course. This means that he is now ready to take the next step in his career and become a full-time guide.

\"I enjoy my job very much and I never want to do anything else! I was swimming in a deep ocean and Stormsriver Adventures’ ship came past and took me on board and gave me the chance to become a better person, developing me with life skills and practical skills. My message to the youth is: no matter how hard it seems, it can be done!\"

Community destinations share success

Now destinations don’t need to constantly re-invent the wheel. Community tourism destinations will be able to freely share information about projects thanks to a new initiative.

A new questionnaire is now online that allows destinations to simply key their basic sustainable tourism information – sit back and wait for every other destination’s information to combine with it.

And reap swathes of opportunities, ways to save money and marketing methods that have really worked.

This co-operative project magnifies the opportunities for any destination – and minimizes the risks by making available lots of factual, practical information and real, workable ideas.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. you share your destination experience

2. others share theirs

3. Everybody who has shared their experience benefits by getting a weekly report and analysis of all shared experience. Simple but effective!

And it’s all absolutely free.
