Thuringia is the federal state of Germany. It is located in the heart of Germany and borders to Hessen, Bavaria, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony. Erfurt is the state’s capital. Free cities of Thuringia are: Eisenach, Weimar, Gera, Suhl, Jena and Erfurt.
In the 5 th century BC the kingdom of Thuringii arose in this area. This Germanic tribe gave its name to modern Thuringia. Thuringia is located at crossroads of major transportation routes, so, there has long been highly developed trade and crafts. Along with Saxony, it is one of the most economically developed federal states of Germany. It was the place where industrialization of Germany has begun last century. In Thuringia potassium salt was mined; porcelain, glass and machine tools were produced. Précised optical instruments of Carl Zeiss company of the city of Jena is still famous throughout the world. "Opel" car’s company, located in Eisenach, is the most productive plant in Europe. Today Thuringia homes 3 universities, 50 research institutes and 20 technical centers.
However, this ancient land is famous not only for industry. Thuringia attracts culture and art connoisseurs by the fact that there once lived and worked Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, Franz Liszt, architects Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Famous church reformer Martin Luther translated New Testament into German in the castle of Wartburg.
Extensive forests and meadows of “green heart of Germany” will attract lovers of active lifestyle. There are all conditions for hiking, water and winter sports. "Rennsteig" trail, leading trough wooded mountains, stretches for 168 km. Among other Thuringian attractions are numerous spa resorts in vicinities of mineral and thermal springs.
