The 2nd Days of Slovenian Tourism (DST), which took place between 15th and 17th October at the Radenci Spa in Radenci, again brought together major tourist events in Slovenia: the 15th Slovenian Tourism Forum with the plenary part of DST, the event “My country – beautiful and hospitable”, the 59th Slovenian Catering and Tourism Convention and other events organised by stakeholders in Slovenian tourism. The plenary portion of the 15th Slovenian Tourism Forum focused on the topic of “Slovenian tourism facing the challenges of tightened economic conditions”, where respectable lecturers from Slovenia and abroad searched for answers to questions that are raised in the face of the severe economic situation within this vital branch of the Slovenian economy.

In order to stress the importance of tourism for the Slovenian economy and upgrade the partnerships made in Slovenian tourism, all major institutions in Slovenian tourism joined forces last year, i.e. the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, the Slovenian Tourist Board, the Tourist Association of Slovenia, the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia, the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, the Slovenian Convention Bureau, the Association of Tourist Agencies of Slovenia and the Association of Travel Journalists of Slovenia (FIJET Slovenia), and prepared the 2ND DAYS OF SLOVENIAN TOURISM. The Days of Slovenian Tourism are aimed at coordinating the standpoints regarding further strategic policies, marketing tourism on the national, regional and local level, educational contents, harmonising the current policies and major projects of Slovenian tourism and networking the professional, business and decision-making tourist audiences.

Radovan Žerjav, MSc, Minister of Economic Development and Technology: “I am pleased that, despite the difficult economic situation we face today in Slovenia and the EU, there is talk of positive subjects, one of which is no doubt Slovenian tourism. The results achieved by the tourism industry – an industry that was set out and promoted strategically by the State – are excellent despite the current situation. This is also the result of the work performed by all those working, cooperating and living in tourism. I am confident that Slovenian tourism is able to deal with the challenges brought about by tightened economic conditions and will be able to find new opportunities. This was also proven this year, when the industry adapted to the drop of Italian guests very quickly and opened the market to new guests from other countries. But in order for tourism to continue to thrive, Slovenia must, naturally, see to it that the overall business environment improves, thus relieving the entire economy regardless of the sector, and establish a financial system that will credit all business and development projects that are based on healthy foundations and excellent ideas. It is my desire that Slovenia succeed in doing this as soon as possible and that this bright and shining example of tourism industry can be successfully followed by other industries.”

Marjan Hribar, MSc, Director General of the Tourism and Internationalisation Directorate at the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology: “The Days of Slovenian Tourism were carried out this year for the second time. The initiative to organise an event that would unite all major events in Slovenia under one roof emerged last year at the Ministry of the Economy and was gladly accepted and supported by representatives of all key organisations working in tourism. Hence, Days of Slovenian Tourism came to life, which united the existing tourist events into a reasonable and rounded whole. The event achieved a much stronger effect and higher profile and, at the same time, ensured better cost efficiency. The event became the central event in tourism in Slovenia. We have proven that we, in tourism, can cooperate – and we can do it well!”

Maja Pak, MSc, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board: “I am pleased that we have managed to prepare the Days of Slovenian Tourism this year as well, in cooperation with partner organisations in tourism and, once more, in severe economic circumstances. Last year, the event was organised for the first time in Portorož, while this year, the event took place in Radenci, where all major professional events in tourism took place from Monday to Wednesday: the Slovenian Tourism Forum, the Catering and Tourism Convention, the event ‘My country – beautiful and hospitable’ and many others. The central day of the event was Monday, when the plenary portion of the 15th Tourism Forum was carried out with a panel discussion, ending with the presentation of the most prestigious awards in tourism. The objective of the Days of Slovenian Tourism is to stress the importance and perspective of tourism for the Slovenian economy as one of the most perspective economic branches and to reward the partnerships required for the realisation of goals in tourism. The topic of this year’s forum was Slovenian tourism facing the challenges brought about by the tightened economic situation.”

Within the frame of the Days of Slovenian Tourism was the 15th SLOVENIAN TOURISM FORUM AND THE PLENARY PORTION OF THE DAYS OF SLOVENIAN TOURISM. The purpose of the Forum and the plenary portion of the event, which ended with a panel discussion, was to present different views on Slovenian tourism vis-a-vis the challenges brought about by the current economic situation from the perspective of foreign and domestic experts and representatives of the Slovenian tourism industry. We searched for answers to questions that are related to the development and promotion of tourism under critical economic conditions and, in particular, in what way Slovenian tourism can make use of the given circumstances in order to grow and develop.

Day 1 of this year’s Days of Slovenian Tourism concluded with a formal dinner, the honorary host of which was the Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Radovan Žerjav, MSc. At the evening event, partner institutions presented their awards. The title of Ambassador of Slovenian Tourism was awarded by the Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Mag. Radovan Žerjav, to Ayhan Öztürk, Director General of Turkish Airlines for Slovenia. The Lifetime Achievement Award for work performed in catering and its development was awarded by the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia to Iztok Legat. The Award for Outstanding Contribution in the development of tourist social organisations was awarded by the Tourist Association of Slovenia to Marjan Rožič, PhD. The Crystal Triglav 2012 was awarded by FIJET Slovenia – the Association of Travel Journalists to the Director of Ljubljana Tourism, Barbara Vajda. Miha Ledinek received an award from the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia, Catering and Tourism section.

The evening gala event was also attended by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Danilo Türk, PhD.
