The WDC Helsinki 2012 Pavilion will be open for one more week, until Sunday 16 September 2012. The six remaining days at the Pavilion, the core of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year that has attracted a lot of visitors and international attention, will offer everything from a traditional open-air dance to design-related debates.

The Pavilion set out to provide free programme and s activities for everyone on all its 105 opening days. Up until the final week, the Pavilion had been visited by some 75,000 people, a number that is expected to rise over 80,000 as the programme of events culminates with the Final Weekend.

“The Pavilion has been a success. We wanted to create an inclusive and accessible venue for events that, together with the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture, would form the core of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year\'s activities. The Pavilion has brought design-related experiences to thousands of city residents and visitors. It has offered a hands-on approach to exploring what design is all about,” says Kaarina Gould, Programme Director for World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

Still time to participate – the Pavilion offers everything from a traditional open-air dance to debates and film nights

The Pavilion will still be open from Tuesday 11 September to Sunday 16 September. The programme for the six remaining days will include debates, workshops, films and dancing. Tuesday 11 September will see the last Reading Group session. In the evening, there will be a not-so-traditional dance lesson, followed by a traditional open-air dance that will last the whole evening. On Wednesday 12 September, the Pavilion invites people to fold origami and brings together design professionals from Helsinki and London. HEL/LO, an event organised by the Finnish Institute in London, will discuss alternative ways of doing things in architecture, design and art.

The Pavilion\'s Final Weekend will kick-off with a workshop on Saturday 15 September, starting at 11am and continuing until 6pm. Over the course of the day, experts will be discussing a number of topics, including places of learning, participating and creating. Saturday will end in an evening of traditional open-air dancing. Like Saturday, Sunday 16 September will start with a workshop at 11am, followed by the Central Library’s Tree of Dreams. Both events will run until 6pm.

Sunday will be dedicated to discussing the legacy the Pavilion will leave behind in the city, and we will also be drawing bugs and other creepy crawlies. The evening will end with a concert of Pekka Kuusisto & Meidän Festivaali (our festival) and a film in the series “Helsinki Film Festival presents – Dreams and nightmares about cities of the future”. Until 7 pm the last day’s visitors can take portraits of themselves with the theme “Farewell party”.

The reuse of the Pavilion will be communicated later

The wood and composite materials of the Pavilion have been provided by UPM, one of the main corporate partners of the WDC Helsinki 2012. After this design year, the Pavilion will be transferred to the ownership of the company. Underlining the importance of recycling, and in the spirit of UPM Biofore, the Pavilion will be relocated to a new address after the design year. The destination will be communicated in due course.

- The Pavilion has conveyed a convincing message about UPM as a frontrunner in ecobuilding. It has been delightful to see how enthusiastically visitors have reacted to the Pavilion as a structure. The Pavilion has proved that today we can make both sustainable and really stylish solutions out of wood, says Ms. Elisa Nilsson, Vice President, Brand Management, UPM.

The Pavilion is the focus point of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 summer activities and it offers a programme open to everyone from Tuesday to Sunday between 12 May–16 September 2012. The Pavilion is implemented by World Design Capital Helsinki 2012, Aalto University, Museum of Finnish Architecture, Design Museum, and UPM. The programme is co-ordinated by Demos Helsinki. The Pavilion is located in Helsinki between the Design Museum and Museum of Finnish Architecture at Ullanlinnankatu 2-4.

During design September, the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 is livelier than ever. More than 200 hundred events, which are predominantly free-of-charge, delight visitors in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The WDC Helsinki 2012’s main international exhibition, Everyday Discoveries, brings household design treasures from 23 countries for people to see and experience. The exhibition will be open in Suvilahti, Helsinki during Helsinki Design Week, between 6 and 16 September 2012.
