Never Forget: Children Are the Future of Design
Designer’s Treasure Chest is a co-operative venture by Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti and its aimed at encouraging preschoolers to observe their surroundings in a new way, through stories and tasks all related to design. The Chest includes a method guidebook for the teachers as well as a variety of learning materials for example a painting felt posters. The Chests will be available to all preschoolers participating in the teaching within the five cities, starting in autumn 2012. The Chests themselves won’t age. They will remain available within the preschool system and can thus be used over and over again when teaching design to the children. The Designer\'s Treasure Chest is designed by students of package design and graphic design: Anu Nokua, Anni Sirkka, Hanna Virkki and Milja Korpela from the Lahti University of Applied Sciences\' Institute of Design and Fine Arts.

Senate Square Doubles as Fashion Village, Helsinki Design Open Showcases Famous Architecture
The historical city center of Helsinki has never been as cool and stylish as it is now. The Senate Square becomes the fashionable spot to be between 4.-18.8. as HEL_FWRD/ Fashion Village exhibits the most interesting names and actors of the Finnish fashion. These 15 days will also include discussion events, for example on the internationalisation process of our fashion industry. Another place to visit is the Finnish Design Market at the Market Square as well as the Finnish Design Shop at the Old Custom House, both selling a variety of Finnish design produce. Only a few blocks away from the Senate Square, at the Marmoripiha of the Rautatalo, Helsinki Design Open (15.-18.8.) offers a unique opportunity to get to know the architecture of building designed by the great Alvar Aalto. This event also includes an opportunity for the audience to see the usually not open for public art collection by Art Foundation Merita.

Design Meets Music (Flow Festival) and Art (Helsinki Festival)
Much like music and art, design too is meant for everyone. WDC Helsinki 2012 has a strong presence at the Flow Festival organised in Suvilahti, Helsinki (8.-12.8.) as well as in the Helsinki Festival (17.8.-2.9.) that spreads around the entire city. During the Flow our ventures include: unique water bar Fountain, festival stage Balloon reflecting the shape of an old gasometer and created as a result of an international architecture competition, a design garden preceding the Everyday Discoveries exhibition to be opened in September in Suvilahti, as well as a video art by Tuomas Alexander Laitinen called Passage, available for viewing at the Garage Gallery. Our co-operation with the Helsinki Festival is available for the audience via two interesting exhibitions: An Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno brings his gigantic installations into the Taidehalli and there they can be approached as art, science and/or architecture. Whereas in the Amos Anderson Art Museum’s Boutique exhibition one can find a creative combination of visual arts and fashion design.

The Design Capital Becomes More Familiar Every Day
Happy news. The inhabitants of the five cities participating in the Design Capital year have a positive attitude towards the venture. According to research carried out by an independent research company Innolink, over 90% of people living in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti knew they were currently living in a World Design Capital. Two out three respondents said that they actively follow the events of the venture and nearly every other respondent said that the Design Capital year has already had an impact on their everyday life. Roughly 70% of the respondents thought that it was particularly important that inhabitants of these cities will, in the future too, have opportunities to develop their own living environment. Creating a better and more comfortable city, suitable preconditions for new companies, stressing the meaning of design on general basis and increasing tourism and international awareness of the participating cities were other things the participants saw as important. The research was carried out in June 2012 with 1 000 consumer respondents within the target group from Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti. The previous part of the research was done in February 2012 and the next one will be completed in October 2012.

The Fact: WDC Helsinki 2012 Breaks Tourism Records
The tourists too are embracing WDC Helsinki 2012. The number of registered over night stays in hotels and hostels of Helsinki between January and May grew 3,5% compared with the previous year. The corresponding figure of Vantaa is 4,5%, Lahti 3,0 % and in Espoo impressive 22,3%. The number of day visitors is also estimated to be rising. The tourists are particularly interested in the architecture, special shops and art. The biggest crowd pleasers in Helsinki have been the Kamppi Chapel of Silence, the Pavilion and the HI Design 2012 exhibition. In Espoo the exhibition center WeeGee has been the most popular place to visit whereas in Vantaa most popular places have been the Finnish Science Center Heureka and the Vantaa Art Museum. Lahti has offered a wide variety of events, even for the cyclists. The figures are expected to rise as the tourism season of Southern Finland, June-August, is seen through and the very eventful September of the Design Capita is over. Nice.
