Select the country and object's type Award Exhibition: A significant open air exhibition in WDC Helsinki 2012 opens on Thursday, 10 May

The INDEX: Award Exhibition, a significant exhibition in the WDC Helsinki 2012 event calendar, opens in the centre of Helsinki on Thursday, 10 May. Featuring more than 40 international design concepts to improve life, the exhibition will take over the Keskuskatu street between the Stockmann department store and the Akateeminen Kirjakauppa bookstore. The exhibition will be open from 10 May until 10 June 2012.

“The exhibition provides a tangible demonstration of how designers work to solve the problems of our world. The exhibition is free and open to all. The exhibited designs include different types of solutions from water purification to energy saving ideas, a sterile birth kit, and a new type of bicycle helmet”, says Kaarina Gould, the programme director of WDC Helsinki 2012.

The open air exhibition presents some of the entries in the 2011 INDEX: Award competition and the five winning concepts. The competition is organised by INDEX:, a global non-profit organisation based in Denmark. In addition to the INDEX: Award, the world’s largest cash prize for design, the organisation runs different types of design courses and promotes debate on the societal role of design.

INDEX: Award Exhibition opens to the public on Thursday 10 May at 12:00 noon. The exhibition will be opened by the Ambassador of Denmark Jens-Otto Horslund, and speeches will be given by the Mayor of Helsinki Jussi Pajunen and Director of INDEX: Kigge Hvid. The opening event is open to all and it includes a performance by the Sväng Harmonica Quartet from Finland.

The Helsinki INDEX: Award Exhibition will be open 24 hours a day for 32 days. Exhibition guides will be available 10:00 AM–8:00 PM on weekdays, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM on Saturdays, and 12:00 noon–6:00 PM on Sundays. Guided tours can be booked for schools and other groups, and separate materials are available to school groups to enhance their visit. For further information about guided tours, email index@wdchelsinki2012.fi.

To date, the 2011 INDEX: Award Exhibition has toured in Copenhagen, Singapore and Luxembourg. After Helsinki, the exhibition will travel to Risør (Norway) and Huddersfield (UK). The previous exhibition, which presented the 2009 finalists, had approximately 8 million visitors around the world. The INDEX: Awards are presented every other year, with a total value of approximately €500,000. The awards were launched in 2005.

The collaboration between INDEX: and WDC Helsinki 2012 also includes design education activities and expert meetings. The collaboration is sponsored by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.

Helsinki has been a member of the international partnership network of INDEX: since spring 2011. The other partnership cities are Risør, Singapore and Copenhagen. The partner cities work together on finding the best solutions to improve people\'s lives across the globe.
