What is design in the 2010s? This is the fundamental question Donald Duck will also ponder – naturally, through several mishaps – in the 68-page special Donald Duck Design edition, to be published in April 2012.
In the story written by Kari Korhonen and illustrated by the Spanish Miguel Fernandez Martinez the life in Duckburg merges seamlessly with the past, the present, and the future of Finnish design. On the pages of the design edition, to be published in four languages (Finnish, Swedish, English, German), in addition to the regular residents of Duckburg, there are characters who very much resemble renowned Finnish designers, like Alvar Aalto, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Stefan Lindfors, and Paola Suhonen. It remains to be seen how Harri Koskinen\'s block lamp integrates in the Duckburg interior. And there is, of course, the true expert of design, Gyro Gearloose, the genius inventor.
The bonus story of the special edition is one illustrated by Carl Barks himself, the 9-page story Gyro Gearloose: City of the future. In the story Barks visualises what kind of place Duckburg will become when cars hover above ground, express trams bucket high up in the air, factories have been over-automated, real trees and shrubs have been replaced with plastic ones, and Uncle Scrooge has too much money. The bonus story Gyro Gearloose: City of the future can be found in the Donald Duck Design special edition in Finnish and in English.
The Donald Duck Design special issue is part of Sanoma Magazines Finland\'s World Design Capital programme. The special edition to be published on 20 April 2012 will not be sold publicly, but a limited amount will be available in events organised by the World Design Capital.
Subscribers of Donald Duck will also get the design story written by Kari Korhonen delivered at home, because the story about the adventures of Donald and friends will also be published in the regular Finnish Donald Duck magazine already on 18 April 2012. This copy of Donald Duck can also be bought at Lehtipiste sales points throughout the country.
