20X0 – A Journey into the Future

October 8, 2011 - January 27, 2013

Go on a thrilling journey to the city of the future! The time train will take visitors on a journey into a city in the year 20X0. The exhibition is a city simulator through which visitors will learn about future housing, transport, consumption and health care. While proceeding through the exhibition, visitors, equipped with an identification wristband, will make choices that have an impact on the future. Based on these choices, the simulator will profile for each visitor a personal sustainability barometer, which can be compared to the overall impact of choices made by previous visitors.

The exhibition’s key theme is lifestyles and their sustainability. Sustainability is measured from three different perspectives: the environment, society and the economy. Our current lifestyles are unsustainable from the entire planet’s point of view, and in order to reverse this trend, sustainable development must be achieved during this century. Solutions that are globally sustainable are often created at the local level. Finland’s particular challenges in this area include housing, food and transport.

People constantly make choices in their lives that will shape the future. In a similar manner, the exhibition visitors will shape their own future through the choices they make at each exhibit and based on the feedback they receive. The choices will be compiled to form a personal sustainability barometer which will be stored with the aid of the identification wristband given to each visitor. The accumulated impact of the choices made by all visitors will be visible so that visitors can compare their own sustainability in relation to that of others.

Visitors will also receive an electronic travel log to keep as a reminder for further study at the exhibition or later online.

The exhibition has 20 different exhibits. The biggest attraction is the space elevator, which is the top visitor destination of the 20X0 city. The elevator transports passengers into orbit around the Earth while giving a wealth of information on what space will be needed and used for in the future. The journey to the 20X0 city will also include a visit to a restaurant, a museum and a shop. A self-service health clinic will give a glimpse into what health care will be like in the future.
