This spring, Kuhmo Chamber Music artists will be giving concerts in Joensuu in February, and in Kuusamo, Helsinki and Kuhmo in March.
The Joensuu concert on Sunday, February 23 is part of the Joensuu Music Winter Festival and goes by the name of “Echoes from Kuhmo Chamber Music”. The programme for the concert consists of the Sonatensazt for violin and piano and Piano Quartet No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, and the Piano Trio in E flat major by Franz Schubert. These will be performed by Valeria Resjan, piano, Siljamari Heikinheimo, violin, Vladimir Mendelssohn, viola and Joona Pulkkinen, cello.
In March, the “Kuhmo Chamber Music caravan” moves on to Kuusamo on the 11th of the month and then down to Helsinki for concerts on the 13th and 14th. On the programme this time will be The “Gypsy Sonata” Trio by Georg Philipp Telemann, Franz Schubert’s transcription of Wenzel Matiega’s Nocturne, Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances and Brahms’s Hymn in Veneration of the Great Joachim and Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor Op. 25. The artists in these concerts will be Siljamari Heikinheimo and Prita Mitchell (violin), Vladimir Mendelssohn (viola), Joona Pulkkinen (cello), Janne Thomsen (flute), Alberto Mesirca (guitar) and Tuomo Matero (double bass).
The Kuusamo concert is at the Kuusamo Hall and the organiser is the Kuusamo education authority. The partnership began last spring, when Kuhmo Chamber Music first visited Kuusamo.
The Helsinki concerts are part of a larger project presenting the province of Kainuu to people in the metropolitan region in 2014. The showcase year will feature Kainuu culture in March–April, a regional festival in Senate Square on June 13–15, and a business event entitled “Made in Kainuu” in early September. The concert at Helsinki City Hall on March 13 marks the beginning of the “Kainuu in Helsinki” year and the Kainuu culture month. The concert is for an invited audience and will be held in collaboration with the Regional Council of Kainuu.
Chamber music meets visual art at the Villa Gyllenberg Art Museum on March 14. People attending the concert will have a chance to visit the art exhibition before the concert and during the interval. The items at this spring’s special exhibition – Finnish paintings from the 1850s to the 1940s – are from the private collection of Einar Wulff (a Finnish businessman) and were last shown 60 years ago. Among the painters represented are Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Pekka Halonen, Jalmari Ruokokoski, Tyko Sallinen, Helene Schjerfbeck, Ellen Thesleff and Maria Wiik. Concert-goers may also view the collection of Ane and Signe Gyllenberg permanently exhibited at the Villa Gyllenberg.
On March 21–23 Kuhmo Chamber Music will be in charge of the music at the “Man and the Cosmos” event in Kuhmo. This time, the musical guests are players from the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra: Antti Tikkanen, Anne Pekkala, Hanna Haapamäki, Pauliina Fred, Jaakko Luoma, Mikko Perkola, Petteri Pitko and Jarmo Julkunen. The repertoire at the concerts and musical interludes will range from Bach to Tiensuu.
The theme for “Man and the Cosmos”, this year being held for the 19th time, is “perfection”. Scientists and artists will each address the topic from their own perspective, after which the floor will be open for discussion. The speakers will included film director Markku Pölönen, Fr Andreas from Valamo Monastery, interior architect Kaarle Holmberg, violinist Antti Tikkanen, Academy Professor Tuija Pulkkinen, and Professor Pirita Seitamaa-Hakkarainen. Professor Pulkkinen is an expert on gender studies and Professor Seitamaa-Hakkarainen is in charge of craft education at the University of Helsinki. The addresses (in Finnish) and discussions will be interspersed with music. The organisers are Pro Kuhmo Oy in partnership with the Academy of Finland and Kuhmo Chamber Music.
These spring concerts carry Kuhmo Chamber Music further along the road towards its 45th summer festival, from July 13 to July 26. The theme for this year is “seven cities, seven arts”.
