Select the country and object's type Rotterdam city of culture will buzz with activity this autumn

Rotterdam city of culture will be buzzing with activity in the coming months. There will be a broad spectrum of things to see and do ranging from works by artists Kokoschka and Leonardo da Vinci to music by the Russian masters to festivals focussing on the arts or hip hop. The city on the Maas offers something for everyone. The cultural season will kick off on Saturday, 14 September 2013 with the 24 Hours of Culture festival. For 24 hours, the city will revolve around theatre, dance, visual arts, music, design, film and architecture. Visitors will be able be able to enjoy previews, premieres, workshops and special projects at more than fifty locations in the city from 5:00 p.m. on the day of the event.

The Rotterdam Maritime Museum will, for example, offer an extremely exclusive tour of the museum depot. This highly secured treasure chamber is where the museums centuries-old collection, with more than 500,000 unique museum objects and works of art, are restored, stored and guarded.

During 24 Hours of Culture, visitors can share their ideas for the elaboration of the S.H.O.E.S. exhibition that will be on display at Kunsthal Rotterdam early next year. The Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photography Museum) will open the multimedia ‘WHITE | Photography, art, design, fashion, architecture, film and video’ exhibition that examines the unlimited possibilities of white on 14 September 2013.

De Wereld van het Witte de Withkwartier (World of the Witte de With Quarter) art festival will present a mix of art, culture, music, performances and spectacles in and around Rotterdam’s Witte de Withstraat (also called the art axis of Rotterdam) the same weekend. Anyone who would like to take some Rotterdam art home with them can visit locations including the new Ababa art store that will open on 11 September 2013. It will display works by both well-established artists and recently graduated artists, with prices ranging from 50 to 50,000 euros.

The rich Rotterdam hip hop culture is the focus of 24 Hours of SUBculture. It will showcase a range of activities, including the ‘Dirty Thirties Breakdance Battle’ at which legendary Old School BBoys from the 1990s will battle it out with each other.

Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival 2013 – 5 - 7 September 2013

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival is a cross-border symphonic festival presented by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. This edition will give centre stage to works by Russian composers Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Mussorgsky. The concerts will also mark Gergiev’s silver anniversary with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Da Vinci The Genius – 6 September 2013 - 6 January 2014

This world-famous travelling exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci has already attracted more than 4.5 million visitors worldwide and could be seen in cities including Moscow, Taipei and Sydney. The exhibition can be seen this autumn in Rotterdam. It features more than 200 of the Florentine master’s unique works, machine inventions and objects.

Oskar Kokoschka – People and animals – 21 September 2013 - 19 January 2014

In 1950, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen became the first Dutch museum to buy a painting by Oskar Kokoschka, the master painter that has inspired entire generations of artists. This large exhibition will focus on his portraits of people and animals and will present more than 140 paintings and drawings by Kokoschka.

Biodesign – 27 September 2013 - 5 January 2014

The New Institute is presenting the ‘Biodesign, on the cross-pollination between nature, science and creativity’. The exhibition presents a selection of design and art projects that integrate with living systems. Trees become a part of houses and bridges, mushrooms form the basis for packaging materials, tobacco leaves grow into patterns for tiles and palm trees are recycled for slippers and handbags.
