Austria is located in the mountainous terrain of Central Europe. More than 75% of its territory is in the Alps - the habitat of deer and a few gazelles. Among the mountains one can see broad green valleys in with the rapid rivers and clear mountain lakes. There are pastures on mountain tops. In the plains they grow cereals, potatoes, grapes. The earliest inhabitants of these lands mined metals and salt, and traded it to the Mediterranean. About IV century BC this territory was conquered by Celtic tribes, and in 15 CE the land of modern Austria was captured by the Romans. Germanic tribes came here in times of great migrations of people. Since the 13th century AD the country was ruled by the Habsburgs. At that time, Austria was the center of a vast empire, which included Spain, Hungary and the Netherlands. It collapsed in 1918 after the defeat in the 1 st World War. During the two world wars, the country's economy was destroyed and completely restored only in the 50's. In 1995, Austria joined the European Union. Not many countries can be compared with Austria in year-round tourism industry. Ski tours, winter holidays, familiarity with outstanding architectural monuments and magnificent musical tradition invariably attract many tourists to this alpine country. Vienna is the capital of Austria, architectural gem and musical center of Europe for several centuries. Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, is a picturesque town, surrounded from all sides by mountains. In the vicinity there is Hellbrunn Palace with "amusing" fountains. A great interest of tourists cause small picturesque towns of Wels, Steyr, Rust, and Gurk, as well as one of the world's largest system of ice caves in the world - Eisriesenwelt, (its length is almost 42 kilometers). Bad Ischl is a popular thermal resort, where Austrian emperors went for treatment and rest. Summer season is ideal for excursion tours, and in winter hundreds of thousands of tourists come from all over the world for holidays in the Alps. Mountain ski resorts with magnificent ski slopes, numerous hotels and chalets, as well as the development of recreational infrastructure can satisfy the most exacting tastes. Most famous ski resorts are in Tyrol, Arlberg and Salzburg . Some of the resorts - Kaprun, Pitztal, Stubaital, Tukser and Sölden, located on glaciers, are suitable for skiing all the year round. In summer time travel companies offer tours to the cleanest lakes in the region of Corinthia.
