Various parts of Slovakia belonged to Samo's Empire, the first known political unit of Slavs, Great Moravia, the Kingdom of Hungary, Habsburg monarchy, Austria-Hungary throughout history. The Slavic tribes settled in the territory of Slovakia in the 5th century. Present-day Slovakia was settled by Slavic Slovaks about the 6th century. They were politically united in the Moravian empire in the 9th century. In 907, the Germans and the Magyars conquered the Moravian state, and the Slovaks fell under Hungarian control from the 10th century up until 1918. In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist country within Soviet-ruled Eastern Block. Slovakia became independent on 1 January 1993, with the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia in the Velvet Divorce. Slovakia's capital city Bratislava is a growing hub of culture, as well as the national seat of politics and business. Its thousand year history offers a great deal to visitors. The second-largest city of Kosice is a centre of heavy industry, but also of architecture and multiculturalism.A vibrant Middle Ages in Slovakia saw the construction and ongoing refurbishment of many outstanding castles and several notable cathedrals. Slovakia is said to have the highest number of fortified castles per capita in the whole world. There is about 180 castles and ruins. Bratislava, the coronation place for the kings of Hungary in the past, has a rich heritage of medieval and baroque architecture. With numerous medieval towns, high mountains, caves and a lively capital city, there's probably something for every traveler to enjoy in Slovakia. Outside the cities you can still find traditional villages, folk traditions and tourist trails meandering through the hilly countryside.
