The Mayor of Kingman, Arizona, John Salem, signed a proclamation declaring “goodwill and mutual cooperation between the City of Kingman and the Hualapai Nation.” By signing the proclamation, the Mayor and City Council express their commitment to “promote their [Hualapai Tribe’s] health, well-being, economic success and to empower them for their future” and to “foster this beneficial relationship.” The proclamation was signed and made public in December 2010.
Kingman, Arizona, is 51 miles due south from the Hualapai Tribe’s capital Peach Springs on Historic Route 66. The Hualapai Nation and its tourism options – Grand Canyon West (home of the Grand Canyon Skywalk) and the Hualapai Lodge and River Runners (the only one-day Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trip) – have substantially contributed to the Route 66 community, particularly Kingman, by drawing thousands of international and domestic visitors. Results from a third quarter 2010 survey conducted by the Arizona Office of Tourism showed that 42.6 % of the visitors traveling through Kingman named the “Grand Canyon West area” as their primary destination.
Kingman has become one of the main gateways to the Grand Canyon’s West Rim and has adopted the official tagline “America’s Route to Grand Canyon West, Home of the Skywalk.” Hualapai Tourism has created a retail location with ticketing and merchandise in the Historic Powerhouse Visitors’ Center to accommodate Kingman visitors seeking a Grand Canyon experience.
On January 8, 2011, the Hualapai Nation will announce its proclamation emphasizing cooperation with the City of Kingman to expand their mutually beneficial economic, geographic and cultural relationships.
