Friuli Venezia Giulia told in a digital diary
The Digital Diary is the latest strategy of tourism promotion of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which has decided to focus on new media and non-conventional approaches to let people know the excellences of its territory. Breathtaking settings, extreme sports, conviviality, food and wine delicacies and the looks and faces of the people: in the images of the diary, the stories by seven professionals expert in the new digital languages, who sounded with video cameras and cameras seaside and mountain resorts, towns and their squares, leisure locations and peaceful landscapes.
The project, called “Can’t Forget Italy”, is supported by Agenzia TurismoFVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Tourist Board), that invited to the region seven international videobloggers, coming from Germany, Holland, Ireland, United States, South Africa and Canada, to make seven videos with a high emotional content dedicated to Friuli Venezia Giulia. These young videomakers spent a week carrying out enthralling and original activities, as well as activities born thanks to their creativity: thanks to their friendly attitude, many of the people met during the shots became spontaneous actors. The result is a digital diary consisting of seven videos and two demos now published on Youtube and Vimeo and shared on the network channels, on dedicated blogs and social media networks.
Considering Friuli Venezia Giulia’s rich and varied tourism offer, the Digital Diary was divided into two editions called FVG Bianco (White) and FVG Blu (Blue) to depict and propose the diversity of the landscape and settings: white for the winter landscape, illuminated by snow and enlivened by extreme sports in the Alps and in the Dolomites, blue for the sea landscape of the coast and of the shining shores of Friuli Venezia Giulia. A beautiful diary to discover an amazing land:

Many routes that provide the opportunity to discover enchanting landscapes like the Campanile di Val Montanaia with its 300-metre pinnacle, or the high cliffs and the hanging bridge of Clap Varmost or the picturesque towns of Erto and Casso with the famous cliff, which is a famous climbing destination where one can also try slacklining, that is to say, walking on elastic ropes.
Canyoning, too, can boast several tracks with various levels of difficulty, which are all extremely charming. The morphology and composition of the mountains make the region particularly rich in gorges, such as the Cellina gorge or the spectacular canyon of the Favarinis stream in Carnia. Those who do not like running can do mountain biking: the tracks are so many that Agenzia TurismoFVG (Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Tourist Board) created a theme map specifically dedicated to this sport. A great novelty is the Piancavallo ski area, which in summer transforms its ski runs into perfect downhill, freeride and slopestyle mountain bike tracks.
Finally, air sports include parachuting, kite surfing, gliding, two-seater flying, paragliding, hang gliding: fly in Friuli Venezia Giulia’s skies to admire amazing views from the Alps to the sea, over the region’s countryside, rivers and towns.
Elio Vittorini’s Gorizia lived and imagined – Part twenty-one: famous authors in Friuli Venezia Giulia
La mia guerra
[in: Piccola borghesia, 1931]
E il favoloso di questi nomi … cominciò ad attaccarsi, intorno a me, agli alberi, alla ghiaia, al rumore del tram, al castello che vedevo oltre i tetti del Corso, sulla collina mezza erba e mezza città…
The story La mia guerra is an emotional fresco of Gorizia, which Elio Vittorini describes through his childish eyes: Piazza Tommaseo, the castle, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the gardens, the Cinema Verdi, Saint Ignazio. The description includes dialect expressions, habits and even the typical dishes that still characterize the peculiar local gastronomy, which is, too, like everything else in this border city, a balance of Mediterranean, German and Slav flavours. Vittorini lives some years in Gorizia, yet not when he is a child, and therefore his tale is a skilful literary product that combines fiction and autobiography, imagination and history.
But the real story of the writer’s stay in Gorizia is even more interesting: Vittorini arrives in Gorizia when he is 19 years old and remains in the city from 1927 to 1930. He is a very ambitious young boy, but without a job, thus he accepts the hospitality of his wife’s relatives who have moved here. His father-in-law owns a radiotelephony shop in the city centre, in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and one of his brothers-in-law opened, in Corso Verdi, the first radio station of the city, which has so few listeners, due to the low number of radio sets present in the city at that time, that they are greeted one by one at the end of broadcasting. The young Vittorini, on the other hand, finds a job in a cement works as a “stonebreaker”, as Hemingway will later call him.
Gorizia in those years is undoubtedly a periphery, but at the same time experiences at its best the season of avant-gardes. Vittorini gets in contact with the seething world of European culture, of which Svevo and Joyce are part too, active in the same years in the near Trieste. Only three years, yet these three years will mark his literary activity for good.
A not-to-be-missed event in Pordenone: the Days of Silent Cinema
Pordenone’s festival dedicated to silent cinema, which has been recently included among the world’s 50 not-to-be-missed cinema events, is becoming increasingly successful. In 2012, too, the festival, which will be held from 6th to 13th October, will amaze enthusiasts with novelties, world premières, special events. In its 31st year the festival is dedicated to Charles Dickens in the bicentenary of his birth: Dickens was of great importance in the history of cinema, due to the contribution of his works to the evolution of film scripts and to their influence on many filmmakers. About a hundred silent films taken from Dickens’ works, produced in various countries of the world and most of which have gone lost. This year the festival proposes the largest exhibition of silent films based on Dickens’ stories, including the first two films taken from his works, which will be shown for the first time after over a century. And there’s more: the programme is divided into ten sections, among musical and special events, cartoon films and cinema of the origins, rediscoveries and retrospectives of the masterpieces that have built the fame of silent cinema across generations of enthusiasts.
Between a film and an event, cineastes can enjoy Pordenone, its frescoed palaces, historical cafés, beautiful shops, or walk on the green banks of the Noncello river.
