Australians Get Involved in Domestic Holiday Push
A new phase of Tourism Australia’s There’s nothing like Australia campaign will encourage individual Australians to share their favourite Australian holiday experiences in a bid to boost domestic tourism by inspiring others to holiday at home.
Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, said that domestic travel is the backbone of Australia’s tourism industry and that Australians are the best advocates when it comes to showing what makes their country a great place to holiday.
“Australians continue to demonstrate they are passionate about holidaying in Australia, and sharing their holiday experiences with others,” Minister Ferguson said.
“When Australians were invited to share their holiday experiences last year the response was tremendous, with around 30,000 recommendations published on the website to create an interactive holiday planning map of Australia.
“We want to build on this success and with this next phase of the There’s nothing like Australia campaign- the very campaign which delivered us the highly successful Oprah visit. Tourism Australia is once again calling on people from across the nation to promote their favourite Australian holiday experiences to their fellow Australians.
“Whether it’s a road trip along the Great Ocean Road, exploring the Tassie wilderness, a short break on Kangaroo Island, a visit to the Red Centre, a surf trip to Byron or the Margaret River, cruising the Great Barrier Reef or visiting the cultural institutions in the nation’s capital – it is time for Aussies to share their favourite holiday experiences.”
Australia continued to be the most popular holiday destination for Australians, with nearly 69 million overnight domestic trips in the past year according to the latest National Visitor Survey.
“While we know Australians are taking shorter domestic holidays, they are taking more of them to relax and spend quality time with family and friends,” Minister Ferguson said.
“This benefits the economy and supports local jobs and small businesses, particularly in regional areas.”
As part of the campaign Tourism Australia will also reward the 16 most inspiring and creative entries with an Australian holiday for the entrant and up to five of their family members or friends.
Australians have until 31 October 2011 to upload their stories and images at www.nothinglikeaustralia.com.au.
