Wines and walks at the Roncal
An ancient countryside villa on the top of a hill, all around terraces cultivated with vineyards and some woody areas as well; further on the plain and then the sea. This is the farm hotel Il Roncal in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area, where over the centuries generations of wine growers have produced DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) wines. The long work to deforest a hill and cultivate it with vineyards is recalled in the name of the facility: in the Friulian dialect, in fact, “roncâl” indicates a woody land from which a terrace is obtained. As a consequence, the most prestigious wines produced by the farm have been chosen to name the bedrooms: Schioppettino, Pignolo, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Ribolla Gialla, Tocai friulano, Verduzzo friulano and Picolit.
The whole farm is a perfect combination of tradition and modernity, both necessary to guarantee the quality of the wines produced and the warm welcome reserved to the guests. The rooms, although equipped with technological comforts (air conditioning, satellite TV, wireless Internet access), will not let you forget the context in which you are, thus in the minibar you will find water and…wine! Breakfast, too, is characterized by typical local gastronomy: raw and cooked ham, cheeses, jams, homemade cakes. If you exaggerate, you can get into shape at the outdoor gym of the park, which is equipped with sports tools for adults, or along the fitness trail in the forest and among the vineyards.
For the tasting of the homemade wines, which is a must, after a visit to the charming underground cellar where the wines mature in oak barrels, you may choose to stop in the tasting room, walk in the park that surrounds the villa or lie on the terrace.
