Popular Australian broadcaster Steve Liebmann has become the official ambassador for Uluru in the New7Wonders of Nature global campaign.

With less than five months to go until voting finishes in the final round of the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, Tourism Australia will work with Steve Liebmann to generate votes for Uluru before the final announcement on 11 November 2011.

Best known for co-hosting the Today news and current affairs show on the Nine Network, Steve Liebmann has worked as a television and radio presenter for more than 20 years. During that time he has travelled extensively around the globe and cites Uluru in central Australia as his favourite place in the world. More recently Steve Liebmann joined the Friends of Australia initiative, Tourism Australia’s advocacy program to promote Australian tourism experiences to the world.

Steve Liebmann explains why Uluru is so close to his heart. “It is unique, spectacular and overwhelming. There is not a photograph or video clip that truly captures the beauty of this world-famous, natural icon,” he said.

“Uluru is never the same twice, with its revolving colours it constantly takes on a different significance, a different meaning. I’ve returned four times over the years and each time offers an entirely new experience.

“My favourite part is watching the sun rise behind the magnificent enormous rock - there’s nothing else like it in the whole world.”

Standing at 348 metres and measuring 9.4kilomtres in circumference, Uluru is one of Australia’s most recognisable natural icons. Located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, 335 kilometres from Alice Springs, the glowing red rock is steeped in tradition and spirituality. Sacred to Anangu and renowned across the globe, Uluru is also listed as a World Heritage Site for its natural and cultural values, and in particular for its continuing Aboriginal traditions and beliefs.

Some of the popular experiences available at Uluru include exploring the base of the rock, seeing the many colours of colours of Uluru at sunrise and sunset from the viewing platform, taking a guided walk with traditional owners and learning about bush skills and foods or visiting some of Uluru’s many rock art sites.

From an original roster of 440 entries down to just 28 finalists, the New7Wonders of Nature campaign will determine the seven most wondrous natural sites in the world, as voted by the public across the globe. Australia has two strong entries competing in the final stage, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef.
