LIVE THE EVENTS OF FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA
A selection of 10 food and wine, cultural, musical and sport events which will be held in the region in July and August 2011
Summer Sundays: educational walks with dogs, donkeys and horses
What do dogs, donkeys and horses have in common? Apparently not much. These three “friends” will be the protagonists of an unusual eco-friendly initiative that will characterize the summer Sundays of 2011. We are talking about the “Educational walks with dogs and with donkeys to discover the places of the Ecomuseum of the Waters of the Gemona area” and of the “Course of approach to horse riding”, two opportunities of visiting the territory in a natural and alternative way. A Well-Bred Dog – educational walks during which precious advice will be given and lessons on the training of one’s dog will be held for a peaceful and serene relationship (Montenars – 19th June, Gemona del Friuli – 10th July, Venzone – 31st July, Majano – 21st August). At Donkey Pace – walks that aim at setting off nature routes in the company of donkeys, friendly, tireless and discreet companions that stimulate to deep reflection and to careful observation in the peacefulness of nature (Osoppo – 3rd July, Treppo Grande – 24th July, Artegna – 14th August, Buja – 28th August). Horse Universe – meetings that provide the opportunity to approach to the world of horse riding, not only from the human point of view, but also from the viewpoint of horses and a chance for non-amateur riders to rediscover a relationship with their four-legged friends, which is often taken for granted (on Sunday 26th June, 17th July, 7th August, 28th August in Buja). This initiative will end on Sunday 28th August with celebrations in Buja, with agility dog and agility horse shows and the approach to the world of donkeys and lunch at the farm restaurant with the products of the “basket of the ecomuseum”.

42nd International Operetta Festival
The International Operetta Festival, which has always been the feather in the cap of the playbill of the “Giuseppe Verdi” Opera House, this year will be made up of fifteen shows, which will be held on nineteen days. In its 42nd year, the festival confirms the continuity of a peculiar artistic offer unique in the Italian music industry, a schedule enriched in its cultural appeal and aiming at recovering the best tradition of operetta, of which Trieste is the capital, and at relaunching its characteristics of internationality. Therefore, it is also necessary to consider from this perspective the distribution of the events in two “historic” venues of operetta shows, inseparable from the setting of the city of Trieste, from the 1950s onwards: St. Just Castle and the Verdi Theatre. On 12th July (with repeats on 14th, 16th and 19th July) St. Just Castle of Trieste will stage, in the dramaturgic revision by Gianni Gori, “A Night in Venice” (Eine Nacht in Venedig), a three-act operetta on the libretto by F.Zell and R.Genée composed by Johann Strauss. The show will be directed by a great specialist of operetta music, Maestro Alfred Eschwe from Vienna. On 13th, 15th and 17th July the Verdi Theatre will stage “The cat transformed into a woman” (La chatte metamorphosée en femme), a one-act operetta on the libretto by Scribe & Mélesville and music by Jacques Offenbach as a première in Trieste in the adaptation by Alberto Bassetti and Domenico Carboni. On 20th, 22nd, 23rd, 24th July the Verdi Theatre will stage another masterpiece: “The Threepenny Opera” by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. It is the revision of John Gay’s Beggar’s Opera, with spectacular sets, coups de théâtre, some of the most famous songs and ballades by composer Kurt Weill. The final part of the Festival, which will take place at the Verdi Theatre, will pay homage to the 150th anniversary of Italy’s Unification with three performances on 29th, 30th and 31st July 2011 of the concert “Viva l’Italia”, the dramaturgy of which is overseen by Gianni Borgna, a journey into the history of Italy – from the Unification until today – told through music in a sylloge ranging from the choir pieces of the Risorgimento to the salon romances, from the parody of the various historical periods, to the most famous songs of today, which have made Italian music famous all over the world. There will be many artists, among whom the names of Daniela Mazzucato, Oblivion, Pino Jodice Band and Andrea Binetti stand out.

738th Bird Festival (Sagra dei Osei)
Famous all over Italy, the “Sagra dei Osei” is a market-exhibition of songbirds and aviary birds, which is held on the first Sunday after August 15 in Sacile (province of Pordenone, well-know as the “Garden of Venice”). It is of very ancient origin: it was mentioned for the first time with the arrival in Friuli of Patriarch Raimondo della Torre on 2nd August 1274. It was on this occasion that the inhabitants of Sacile asked the Patriarchal authority of Aquileia for permission to include the market of San Lorenzo, which up to then had been under the control of the Castaldia (farm area) of Caneva, within the city walls, thus transforming it into a free fair. Since 1274, the annual appointment has been repeated, passing intact through customs and fashions, preserving its original charm. For example the songbirds contest: excellent imitators of the chirping of birds. Besides the national exhibition and the famous song contest, during which the “National Thrush” is elected, the festival is enriched by the Italian bird exhibition, the exhibition of barnyard animals, the exhibition of DOC – Denomination of Controlled Origin – wines from Friuli Venezia Giulia, the historical apiculture exhibition, the Italian dog exhibition, art and photography exhibitions.
