Given the disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy, the Take the H.E.L.M. competition deadline has been extended to December 31. The remaining schedule of the competition will remain the same, and winners will still be announced in March.

The competition administrators have also announced a fifth prize prioritized for a current Lower Manhattan business seeking to expand. All winners will receive $250,000 each, with priority for one prize given to an existing Lower Manhattan company, and priority for a second prize given to a start-up.

The Downtown Alliance is excited to share with you a new, local competition to encourage businesses to hire and expand in Lower Manhattan. Officially launched last week by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, “Take the H.E.L.M.: Hire + Expand in Lower Manhattan” is a contest for businesses to join other innovative companies that have recently opened or expanded office space in Lower Manhattan. Take the H.E.L.M. is open to any enterprise with plans to open, expand or relocate their offices in Lower Manhattan in the next twelve months. Up to 20 finalists will receive $10,000 in cash grants, up to five winners will receive $250,000 in rent reimbursements or working capital grants. Check out the latest news coverage about Take the H.E.L.M. here and here.

At a time when the technology industry continues to thrive across New York City, the Downtown Alliance is thrilled to serve as a partner and judge for this important initiative. Take the H.E.L.M. is currently open for submissions; deadline to apply is December 31, 2012. Eligible businesses will be asked to submit applications and the competition will employ a multi-stage evaluation process, with the chance for finalists to win one of 5 grand prizes. Competition details are as follows:

5 businesses will receive cash prizes of $250,000 each to open, relocate to or expand in Lower Manhattan

Up to 20 finalists prizes of $10,000

Tech finalists will receive an opportunity to pitch to FirstMark Capital for investments from the New York City Entrepreneurial Fund

All finalists will interview with a distinguished panel of judges including Downtown Alliance president Liz Berger, Ken Chenault, Lawrence Lenihan, Arthur Levitt, Alexis Ohanian, Carly Roney, and David Tisch. Please see full list here

Creative, technology (start-ups and mature companies), and international businesses are encouraged to apply
