Spend a “Historic” Independence Day at Plantation Agriculture Museum

Spend Independence Day a little differently this year by having a “historic” one at Plantation Agriculture Museum State Park in Scott. Three different activities are scheduled for visitors to enjoy while honoring our country’s birthday.

Learn about The Day and Life of a Civil War Solider during an hour-long program beginning at 10 a.m. A Civil War re-enactor depicts the daily life and routine of a solider during that era where the length of your life as an infantryman depended upon skill, determination and tact.

An Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social also begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. Take a break from the summer heat by enjoying some hand-churned, homemade ice cream. A variety of toppings are served buffet-style. Supplies are limited, available on a first-come, first serve basis. Come early to enjoy this treat.

From 2 p.m.-3 p.m., a Flintlocks vs. Rifled Percussion Muskets of the Civil War program takes place. During the conflict, over 600,000 men from both North and South gave their lives. One of the major reasons for so many deaths was the introduction of more accurate, reliable, and deadly firearms. A period-era re-enactor will explain the changing stages of Civil War weaponry.

Admission to the Ice Cream Social is $3; the other two events are free. While you’re in the area, drop in at Hardin Farms and Market Too to get a bite to eat and pick up locally-grown fresh produce, homemade jams and jellies, plus meats, cheeses, gourmet food products and gift items. Additional Scott attractions include Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, Sonny\'s Produce, Scott Pumpkin Patch Farmers Market, and Scott Plantation Settlement.
