What's New
Passengers Enjoy Artistic Welcome at Newly Revamped LAX Tom Bradley International Terminal
Large flat-screen entertainment and original video art are among the aesthetic pleasures that greet passengers at the newly revitalized Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The passenger-pleasing additions are just one element of the major TBIT renovation (completed May 2010) which also included utilitarian infrastructure improvements and expansions. The $22.9 million TBIT Enhanced Passenger Experience Project includes installations in Baggage Claim and in the Arrivals Lobby (meet-and-greet area). In Baggage Claim, new large, high-definition, flat-screen monitors and entertainment display audio zones provide passengers with a warm "Welcome to Los Angeles!" as well as information about what to see and do in the city. The Arrivals Lobby provides a vibrant, colorful introduction to LA, with two installations of original video art. One is the longest video project at any U.S. airport -- a linear strip of 29 back-to-back, 46-inch liquid crystal display screens for a total of 58 screens suspended from the ceiling in a serpentine shape with an overall length of 90 feet. The other is a media wall composed of 25 46-inch screens in a 5-screen-by-5-screen matrix. The video art will be ever-changing, with ongoing commissions from 17 artists/artistic teams. The $737 million TBIT renovation project was completed May 26, 2010, and solidifies LAX as the West Coast gateway to the U.S. LAX is the nation's second-busiest airport and the seventh busiest in the world.

Universal Studios Hollywood Introduces King Kong 360 3-D on its World-Famous Studio Tour
King Kong 360 3-D Created by Peter Jackson, the world's largest, most intense 3-D experience debuting July 2010 at Universal Studios Hollywood takes guests to the next generation of theme park excitement. Riders on the Studio Tour tram will be transported, via a darkened soundstage, to King Kong's home - Skull Island - where through the magic of the world's largest Surround Digital 3-D projection system they are thrust in the middle of a ferocious battle between the worlds' most famous ape and a giant T-Rex. Visitors will feel the tram jolt and reverberate as the 3-D battle unfolds around them. Studio Tour guests will also have a first-hand look at the more than 4 acres of newly rebuilt backlot sets. The modern tour trams now feature flat-screen hi-def monitors and playback systems with commentary from filmmakers, actors and personalities plus clips from numerous movie and television productions corresponding to sites visited along the Tour route. Behind-the-scenes movie-magic continues at Universals' all new Special Effects stage, where guests will learn the secrets behind the making of their favorite blockbuster films. Interactive demonstrations of CGI, stop motion, motion capture, and 3-D technologies will give visitors an in-depth behind-the scenes look.

"Mummies of the World" to Premiere at the California Science Center
The largest exhibition of mummies ever assembled will make its world premiere July 1 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. On display for a limited time only, "Mummies of the World" is an astounding collection of both naturally and intentionally preserved human and animal mummies, as well as related artifacts from all over the globe, presented together for the very first time. The exhibition offers a compelling blend of history and science -- an opportunity to study real mummies up close, and to learn more about who they were and how they lived through hands-on science exhibits, multimedia 3-D animations and current science tools. Treasures on display include one of the oldest mummified infants ever discovered; the presentation of a complete mummified family; a German nobleman discovered by his own descendants; and Egyptian animal mummies, ritually preserved to accompany royals for eternity. "Mummies of the World" is a ticketed event and requires a timed-entry; advance reservations are highly recommended.

The San Fernando Valley Offers Star-Powered Fun and Excitement
As home to the world's major networks and movie studios, as well as nearly countless arts organizations, the San Fernando Valley - known simply as "The Valley" to those in the know - will soon be adding another world-class performing arts venue to the mix. The new Valley Performing Arts Center, at the California State University, Northridge Campus is on track for a January 2011 inauguration, with a sneak peek preview in late fall featuring a performance by the Moscow State Symphony orchestra. Arts in the valley, however, range well beyond Northridge. Home to three major motion picture studios -- Universal Studios Hollywood, NBC Studios and Warner Bros., all of which offer access to the public - the Valley's diverse entertainment talent provides a solid base for the performing arts venues located throughout the region. The NoHo (North Hollywood) Arts District, in particular, has more than 20 theaters presenting live performances ranging from the classics to improve. Art galleries add to the bohemian vibe along Lankershim Boulevard, interspersed with cafés that often feature live music. Universal CityWalk at Universal Studios Hollywood also comes alive with free live music on the CityWalk Stage every Friday and Saturday through the summer.

Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum Opens in Long Beach
The breathtaking art of the South Pacific is as close as Long Beach, at the new Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PieAM), which opened June 12 in Long Beach, near the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA). Like entering an island village, the museum features a traditionally peaked building and lush sculpture garden with native South Pacific plants. A mural (by Long Beach native Art Mortimer) recreates a traditional Men's House from the Island of Yap on the building's exterior; while inside sculptures, textiles, paintings, wooden tools, jewelry and carvings from across the Pacific showcase the arts of the Marshall, Samoa, Guam, Fiji and Tongan islands. Nationalities represented include Micronesian, Hawaiian, Ni-Vanuatu, Maori, Polynesian, Melanesian, Palauan, and the I-Kiribati. Permanent and rotating exhibits as well as continually commissioned new works will be enhanced with traditional dance performances, interactive cultural demonstrations and learning programs. PieAM was created by the late Dr. Robert Gumbiner, who died in January 2009, and includes his personal collection of Pacific Island ethnic art. PieAM also is available for small-sized meetings and banquets.
