A new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum features the icons, images and emblems that help make New Mexico stand out from all the other states.
\"It\'s all Symbolic: The State Symbols of New Mexico\" is on display in the museum\'s North and Central Corridors.
While there are numerous unofficial symbols within New Mexico, these are the 40 symbols officially adopted by the Legislature - the State Symbols of New Mexico.
Often when we think of \"state symbols,\" we think of symbols of nature - things like a state tree, state flower, or a state insect. While these were often the first official symbols to be adopted by a state - aside from governmental symbols like a state seal or flag - the kinds of things memorialized today as state symbols are much more interesting and diverse.
Among New Mexico\'s 40 official state symbols are the state aircraft, fossil, butterfly, ballad, poem, cowboy song, guitar, and cookie.
The exhibit is on display in conjunction with New Mexico\'s statehood centennial during 2012.
