Nopalitos Galleria to Host \"Platicas de Nuestra Ciudad (Conversations on the History of Las Cruces)\"

In celebrating the State of New Mexico Centennial Celebration and recognizing the City of Las Cruces\' culture and heritage, Nopalitos Galleria presents \"Platicas de Nuestra Ciudad,\" - Conversations on the History of Las Cruces.

Nopalitos Galleria will display monthly during 2012 historical art, book readings, food events, music and speakers. A different photo exhibition will be presented of local families, including private collections. The monthly scheduled Platicas (speaker series) will pay tribute to the families who have shaped and contributed to the history of Las Cruces.

The opening Reception for Platicas de Nuestra Ciudad will be on Saturday January 7. Decedents of Don Pablo Melendrez, founding father of Las Cruces, will be in attendance. Also attending will be 94 year old Henry Melendrez and current family patriarch of the Don Pablo Melendrez family linage.

On Sunday January 8, the first of 24 Sunday Platicas will occur. Las Cruces resident and historian Mr. Carlos Melendrez will be discuss the history of the Melendrez family. Each Platica is scheduled for 30 minutes followed by a question and answer session. The talk is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.

A parade will kick off the centennial events on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. in downtown Las Cruces. The parade begins at the Loretto Town Center and will circle the downtown mall on Church and Water streets.
