Mariachi Real de Chihuahua, one of Las Cruces\' top mariachi groups will celebrate their 7th anniversary with a free concert at the Rio Grande Theatre on Jan. 24, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.
Mariachi Real was started in January 2005 by local musicians Jesus Morales and Wendy Martinez. They put together a small group of experienced musicians and began rehearsing weekly. It wasn\'t long before the new mariachi was booking gigs and gaining recognition.
In their first year together, Mariachi Real had already become known outside of Las Cruces. They made two trips to Chihuahua to perform, and they were invited to the Governor\'s Mansion in Santa Fe to perform for Governor Richardson on two different occasions. They also auditioned for the Student Showcase at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference (LCIMC), and were one of five groups chosen to perform that year.
In the years that followed, Mariachi Real de Chihuahua has gone on to play all over southern New Mexico and El Paso, as well as several trips to perform in the Santa Fe area. Billed as \"Las Cruces\' Premiere Mariachi,\" this group was chosen to represent Las Cruces as the ambassador group for the LCIMC in 2010 and 2011. Mariachi Real received recognition from U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce after their 2011 Showcase performance.
The name of the group has been cause for some confusion from time to time, according to co-director Marcus Royo.
\"People sometimes ask us if we\'re from Chihuahua,\" Royo said. \"One of the reasons for including Chihuahua in the name of the group is that many members of the group have roots there. There\'s a lot of pride in that. But we definitely belong to Las Cruces and the Mesilla Valley.\"
The concert is part of the \"Every Other Tuesday\" concert series that takes place at the Rio Grande Theatre, and it is free of charge. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. at the historic theatre in downtown Las Cruces.
