Spend Your Centennial Day Reliving New Mexico\'s Storied Past on Celluloid! Made in New Mexico: A Presentation by Film Historian Jeff Berg

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - What to do after the Centennial Parade? Why not relive New Mexico\'s glorious past as it appears on film? That\'s right, New Mexico\'s celluloid past is just as long and illustrious as Hollywood\'s and to prove this point, professional Film Historian Jeff Berg--who also sits on the board of the Mesilla Valley Film Society and is a frequent freelance writer for several publications in the area--will present portions of his critically acclaimed Made In New Mexico film series, featuring clips and fascinating narratives concerning the history of New Mexico filmmaking from 1898 onward. Co-sponsored by the Doña Ana Arts Council and the Mesilla Valley Film Society, two segments of Made In New Mexico will screen at the Rio Grande Theatre on Saturday, January 7, 2012, the first beginning at 1pm and the second at 3pm.

How many people know that the very first film footage shot in New Mexico was by Thomas Edison, himself, in 1898? Or that silent film director Mack Sennett set one of his comedy shorts, \"The Tourists\" starring Mabel Normand, at the Albuquerque train station? Or that such notable films as John Ford\'s Oscar-winning \"Grapes Of Wrath,\" Clint Eastwood\'s \"Every Which Way But Loose\" and Howard Hughes\' infamous film, \"The Outlaw\" starring Jane Russell, were filmed right here in our home state? All this and more will be revealed when local film buff and historian Jeff Berg opens his celluloid vaults to present segments of his acclaimed Made In New Mexico film series. Featured in the presentation will be clips from over a century\'s worth of motion pictures, some well-known and others thought long forgotten. The first segment, Westerns Part 4, will begin at 1pm. The second segment, entitled The Good, The Bad And The Curious, will begin at 3pm. A Centennial treat for the entire family!

The Rio Grande Theatre is located at 211 N. Main Street, in Las Cruces. Showtime for Made In New Mexico is 2pm; doors open at 1:30pm.
