ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH 2011 CELEBRATES ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY: From December 1 through 4, Miami will host the 10th Art Basel Miami Beach, the most prestigious art show in the Americas. More than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. To mark its 10th anniversary, Art Basel Miami Beach will inaugurate a new collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art on the Art Public sector, which will transform Collins Park with unique artworks and performances by renowned artists and emerging talents. For the first time, Art Video will be presented on the large-scale outdoor projection wall of the New World Center, designed by Frank Gehry. The free pubic viewings will be part of a number of special events and performances taking place across Miami Beach for the duration of the show to celebrate the 10th anniversary. Over the past ten years, Art Basel Miami Beach rapidly developed from a vibrant newcomer on the global art scene to the leading international art show in the Americas. NEW MIAMI RESTAURANT FEATURES AWARD-WINNING CHEF VAN AKEN: Join award-winning Executive Chef Norman Van Aken for a transformative dining experience embracing farm-to-table philosophies at Tuyo, the crown jewel sitting atop Miami Dade College’s new $22 million, eight-story Miami Culinary Institute, offering a spectacular view of the bay and Miami skyline. Van Aken has returned to his old stomping grounds and, as executive chef, is once again presiding over what he hopes will be recognized as a world-class restaurant. The 60-seat Tuyo, which means “yours” in Spanish, opened in late October 2011 serving dinner and the occasional private lunch group. Unlike Van Aken’s past Miami restaurants — his eponymous Norman’s and Norman’s 180 — Tuyo is more than a business or a cuisine philosophy. It’s a mission statement, as much Van Aken’s as it is the college’s. Van Aken and Miami Culinary Institute founding director and chef John Richards have kept Tuyo true to the institute’s message of local, sustainable cuisine. The décor is green — the floor, for instance, came from reclaimed lumber. The featured dishes carry Van Aken’s signature flair, what he calls the “patois of immigrant people.” And the ingredients are local, local, local, from South Florida fishermen and farmers, even the college’s organic garden. A peek at the menu: Brazilian creamy cracked conch chowder, hamachi tiradito, pan-cooked fillet of Key West yellowtail, pork Havana and guava cheesecake. MIAMI BEACH\'S LINCOLN ROAD GAINS NEW HIGH-PROFILE GARAGE AND RETAIL SPACE DESIGNED BY \'STARCHITECT\' ENRIQUE NORTEN: Miami Beach\'s legendary walking promenade, Lincoln Road, has gained an important new destination with the addition of Park@420, the innovative Enrique Norten-designed parking garage and retail center. Situated behind 420 Lincoln Road, the original 1940s-era building at the southwest corner of Washington Avenue and Lincoln Road, Park@420 is literally at the center of the city\'s vibrant artistic, cultural and retail renaissance. The five-story, $40 million contemporary complex contains a 500-space parking garage with an entrance conveniently located on 16th Street and Drexel Avenue, and Shoppes@420, which boasts 17,400 square feet of available retail and restaurant space. Lincoln Road is now anchored on both east and west by mixed-use garage structures designed by two of the world\'s top architectural firms: Norten\'s TEN Arquitectos, based in Mexico and New York, and Herzog & de Meuron of Switzerland, which designed the garage at the corner of Alton Road. SALTWATER TANK FILLED WITH FROGS, CATFISH AND TURTLES AT A CRAZY NEW BBQ SHOP: Hatched from the Southern-BBQ\'d brains of Ron Garcia (Burger & Beer Joint) and Raul Rodriguez is Hogzilla’s Inspired Barbeque: a supper-club-meets-sports-bar that opened in November 2011, boasting an eclectic hunting-lodge feel that \"draws from swamp culture legends\" of the Everglades, leading them to describe it as \"redneck chic\", even though it\'s not completely full of Kodiak. Basically the Waterboy\'s mom\'s dream house, the joint\'s jammed with details both historic (the original Terrazzo floors from the former Miami Beach Justice of the Peace building) and hillbilly, like a country-style front porch stage, outhouse-ish bathrooms, turtle-/frog-/catfish-filled fish tanks, and corrugated metal walls covered with guns/knives they’ve spray-painted neon pink and blue, plus skulls from animals who’re just glad they weren\'t killed by those specific guns. The menu swings similarly Florida-backcountry, plating everything from gator sausage, Vermont maple syrup-marinated bacon, and Everglades Frog\'s Legs with mango chili BBQ sauce, to platters like The Hogzilla Rack (a 10hr-smoked rubbed beef rib), a whole suckling pig that requires you call 72hrs in advance, and cinnamon-cured Long Island smoked duck breast. Because Southerners very much enjoy dignified drinking, the tidily stocked, open-\'til-5am bar is flush with 30 bourbons (displayed alongside jars of housemade pickles and moonshine) as well as 12 taps, and cocktails like the Rebel Yell (bourbon sour w/ an egg white and lemon juice), Boss Hog Iced Tea, and punch bowls such as the beer/vodka/pink lemonade \"Hop, Skip, and Go Naked\" -- which, depending on how you pronounce it, is also a pretty good summation of redneck chic. MIAMI\'S DESIGN DISTRICT BECOMING A HIGH-END SHOPPING DESTINATION: The decision of luxury fashion design label Hermès of Paris to move to the Design District should bolster the district\'s growing reputation as a high-end shopping destination. Miami\'s Design district is slowly taking on the high-end fashion sheen of Bal Harbour Shops. The neighborhood north of downtown Miami will soon be home to Hermès, the ultra-luxury fashion retailer. Hermès is following the lead of French designer Louis Vuitton, which plans to open a store in the district in the next two years. Scoring Hermès as a tenant is a victory for Design District developer Craig Robins, a force behind the transformation of the former industrial neighborhood. Robins, President and Chief Executive of Miami-based Dacra, confirmed Hermès will open a store in one of his buildings late next year. He declined to give details on the deal, citing a confidentiality agreement. Hermès and Louis Vuitton will be venturing into an area that has for the last five years evolved into a hot spot for trendy restaurants, home decor brands and high-fashion designers. Some include Christian Louboutin, Y-3, Sebastian James, Fendi Casa and restaurants such as Michael\'s Genuine Food & Drink, Sra. Martinez and Fratelli Lyon. The district has come a long way from the late 1990s, when many home decor and furniture tenants abandoned it for the Design Center of the Americas in Dania Beach. The empty buildings depressed rental rates and property values. Robins seized the opportunity, buying neglected properties and eventually amassing nearly 1 million square feet of land and about 700,000 square feet of buildings. Shortly after arriving in the district, Robins hired noted Miami architect and urban planner Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, a co-founder of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co. and dean of the University of Miami\'s School of Architecture. LEADING UP TO THE DISCOVER ORANGE BOWL GAME, ORANGE DRIVE MIAMI BEACH MUSIC FESTIVAL BRINGS TOGETHER AN ARRAY OF TOP MUSIC PERFORMERS: The 2nd annual Orange Drive Miami Beach Music Festival will consist of a three-day event on the sands of Ocean Drive, bringing together a series of music artists, sponsored activations, a village opened to the public and Orange Bowl related festivities. Taking place between 7th and 9th Street on Ocean Drive; the New Year’s Eve Weekend Festival will kick off December 30th and extend through January 1st welcoming over 100,000 visitors.
