Select the country and object's type Museum Chosen for International Art Show

Las Cruces, N.M. - An international art show called, \"Art of the Plains: The 27th American Plains Artists Annual Juried Exhibit & Sale,\" will open at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum with an event on Sept. 8.

The opening reception and announcement of awards will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 8. Also, renowned artist Robert \"Shoofly\" Shufelt, the juror for the show, will give a lecture at 7 p.m. called \"My Adventures in Western Art.\" Nearly $20,000 in awards will be announced during the evening. Admission to the Sept. 8 events is free.

The American Plains Artists selected the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum for its 2011 show for several reasons, according to Judy McElroy, the APA show chairperson.

\"We liked the fact that it is a farm and ranch museum, it\'s a very fine facility and it has enough room to host a show of our size,\" said McElroy. \"The staff there has been so nice to work with. We\'re looking forward to a great show.\"

Last year\'s show was held in Lincoln, Neb., and the 2008 and 2009 shows were held at venues in Texas.

\"This is the first art show of this magnitude held at the Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum and we\'re excited to have it,\" said Craig Massey, the museum\'s communications manager. \"We\'ve showcased some wonderful artwork from great artists before, but never from so many artists from so many different states.\"

The APA show features the work of artists from throughout the U.S. and even Canada. McElroy said past shows have included artists from France.

The 2011 show features 118 works of art in various mediums. The artwork focuses on the American Plains as a source of artistic expression in traditional, realistic and representational fine art paintings, drawings and sculpture. It features landscapes, Native Americans, cowboys, horses, wildlife and more.

The show will be on display in the museum\'s Legacy and Traditions galleries through Oct. 30. For more information, call (575) 522-4100. The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road, Las Cruces, NM 88011. www.nmfarmandranchmuseum.org.
