Mount Nebo State Park in Dardanelle celebrates the end of summer with Labor Day Fun Sept. 2-5. Festivities include an ice cream social, hikes, and nature programs. Contact the park at 479-229-3655 for a detailed schedule. Admission is free.

In 1923 Petit Jean became the first State Park in Arkansas, thanks to the efforts of Dr. T.W. Hardison. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps laid the foundation for the park as we know it today. Festival on the Border, Fort Smith’s new multi-genre music festival, is Sept. 9-10. Performers include Dierks Bently with Randy Rogers Band, Andy Grammer, Girl Talk, The Fray, and the Fort Smith Symphony with guest violinist Mark O’Conner. Take part in the 31st Cowie Wine Fest Arkansas and Arkansas Championship Grape Stomp on Sept. 10 near Paris. The Cowie Winery offers a blessing of the wine, grape stomping, live music, games, food and tours of the Arkansas Historic Wine Museum. There will also be a ringing of the 26 large church bells. Admission is free and events take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The winery is located three miles west of Paris on Ark. 22 at Carbon City. The 9th annual Rods & Ribs takes place Sept. 17 on the Ozark courthouse square, and is presented by the Ozark Chamber of Commerce and Rivertown BBQ. The event features antique cars and trucks, music, and barbecue ribs.

If you like old cars, mark Sept. 21-24 on your calendar, the date of the 14th annual Petit Jean Fall Swap Meet. This annual swap meet is hosted by the Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain. Classic and vintage vehicles from all over the region will be on display. Cars, parts, antiques, arts and crafts, and memorabilia can be found at over 700 vendor spots. In 1820 the Arkansas River Valley was wild and relatively unexplored. American Indians, hunters, soldiers, and explorers were the first to visit the area. It will entail living historians demonstrating firearms, clothing, cooking, camping equipment, and survival skills as they really rough it.
