Las Cruces, N.M. - The Branigan Cultural Center will host Bruce Berman: Border Stories in black, white and color, an exhibition of work by photographer Bruce Berman, during the month of August. An opening reception will be held during the First Friday Downtown Ramble on Friday, August 5 from 5 to 7pm.

Bruce Berman: Border Stories in black, white and color will highlight work from Berman's effort over the last 30 years to document life on the United States / Mexican border in El Paso, TX, and Juarez, Mexico. The exhibition exemplifies Berman's belief that photojournalism should effect change positive change, as he often tells his students: "I want you to use photography as an instrument of education, not self expression, so that you will have a chance to matter."

Berman has been a professional photographer for more than four decades, and has worked in the "concerned photographer" style for most of his career. His first documentary projects were based in Chicago where he photographed Appalachian migrants, Black Panthers, and gritty street life in the Rust Belt.

Berman is assistant professor in documentary photojournalism and Visual Journalism Sequence Coordinator at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. In addition to his personal work, his photography is often featured in The New York Times, Time magazine, and other national and international publications.
