Exhibit Opening & Artist's Reception

Capturing the Spirit

Aug. 18, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"Capturing the Spirit" is an exhibition featuring art by renowned animal artist Kathy Winkler. The free reception will include hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Over the past decade Winkler has visited ranches and parks from Virginia to the Rockies, north to the Dakotas and south to Texas looking for potential subjects for her paintings, learning all that she can about the animals she meets along the way. Admission to the reception on Aug. 18 is free. The show will be on display in the Museum's Arts Corridor through Dec. 4.

"Catch the Kid" Living history performances

Aug. 27, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The museum will have two living history performances as part of the New Mexico Department of Tourism's "Catch the Kid" program, a statewide Billy the Kid scavenger hunt. The museum also will display Pat Garrett items from its collections during the month of August, including a clay bust, two letters written by Garrett and a photograph of him. Regular museum admission is required.

Billy the Kid will make a cameo appearance in "The Reign of the Six-Shooter," which will be in the mercantile in the Heritage Gallery. Andrea Severson will portray 15-year-old Lily Casey who found herself near the center of the Lincoln County War. Safe in her father's store, she explains how the local economic conflict spiraled out of control and introduces one of the combatants, a cattle rustler named Billy the Kid. The 10- to 15-minute performances begin at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Museum visitors on Aug. 27 also will get to meet Pat Garrett in "Deeds of Daring and Blood," which will take place at the chuck wagon near the museum's Dairy Barn. Garrett did many great things in his life, but is remembered most as the man who killed Billy the Kid. Visit with Capt. Garrett as he discusses his illustrious life and reluctantly tells the tale of how William Bonney was finally brought to justice. This 15- to 20-minute performance features Scott Green as Pat Garrett. Performances are 11:30, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30.
