Howling Coyote Coffeehouse & Open Mic

A staple of the downtown ArtRamble since February of 2006, the Howling Coyote started out as a jam session for local musicians and quickly grew into a showcase featuring some of finest talent Las Cruces has to offer. The monthly event will now make the Rio Grande Theatre its new home and will continue to feature primarily acoustic musicians, singers and songwriters, but will also welcome poets, storytellers and comedians with family-appropriate material. Every Other Tuesday: Blues Messiah

The Rio Grande Theatre welcomes back local legends, Blues Messiah. The four-man group--made up of founder and lead singer Lawrence Montes, his son Michael Montes on drums, Baldomero Garcia on rhythm guitar and Jesse Gutierrez on bass-has been playing in and around Las Cruces for 16 years, released two albums and are repeatedly invited to play both the Silver City Blues Festival and the Ruidoso Blues Festival. Film Las Cruces

The Rio Grande Theatre and the City of Las Cruces Film Liaison present a monthly forum on the second Wednesday of each month, by an organized group of filmmakers, digital media artists, students and interested members of the community with the express purpose of showcasing local talent and, in turn, drawing film and television productions to Las Cruces. During each month's meetings, trailers for locally made films will be screened, alongside short films by student filmmakers, followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers and industry news as it pertains to our area. Literacy Through Movement

Come help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Las Cruces Farmer's Market with this very special event, produced by the Pan American Dance Institute of New Mexico State University. Literacy Through Movement is an interactive children's program designed to promote literacy, stimulate new ideas, engage the kinesthetic intelligence and get children interested in reading by bringing books to life through dance. Seven familiar books are enacted in this 45 minute program: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Where The Wild Things Are, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Cactus Poems, Snapshots From A Wedding, Big Mama's and The Squiggle.Doors open at 11am, showtime is 11:30am. Ricko Meets Garbo

A silent film presentation of the legendary actress Greta Garbo in The Temptress (1926) with musical accompaniment by multi-instrumentalist Ricko Donovan, featuring hammered dulcimer with percussion and guitar, looping. A combination of years of performance experience and a fascination with silent film create a step into the past for a memorable evening of superior musical and visual passion. Guaranteed to knock your bobby socks off, 'Remember Then Band' is the #1 doo wop group in Las Cruces. White Sands International Film Festival

This year, Hollywood comes to the Rio Grande Theatre as we host part of the White Sands International Film Festival, over three big days. On Friday, August 26, from 12:30 - 3:30 we will host a workshop entitled "How To Make a Movie" with David Derks, Ginger Perkins, Bill Immerman. On Saturday, August 27, from 12:30 - 3:30 there will be another workshop on Acting/Casting with Sam Muir. Later that evening, we will host the WSIFF Awards Gala at 6pm. Finally, on Sunday, August 28, starting at 11:30am, we will present student films in conjunction with SalsaFest. For more information and ticket prices, visit www.wsiff.com.

On Exhibit in the El Paso Electric Gallery

Marilyn Sahs

The haunting works of ward-winning conceptual artist Marilyn Sahs, will be on display in the El Paso Electric Gallery, South of the Rio Grande Theatre lobby, for the month of August, 2011. Utilizing untraditional media, such as wood, bed linen, dyes, glues, wax and even food condiments, Marilyn employs a unique technique of adding and subtracting color values to create dreamlike images and permanent linen prints. The exhibit will run through the month of August 2011, beginning with an artist reception on August 5, from 5 to 7pm, as part of the Downtown Art Ramble.

Also included that evening will be the regular Literary Open Mic in the Rio Grande Theatre auditorium, from 5:30 to 7pm, followed by the Howling Coyote Coffeehouse/Open Mic, directly afterwards. On permanent display in the Clute/Muggenburg Gallery are memorabilia and photos from the Rio Grande Theatre's long and illustrious reign in downtown Las Cruces.
