The August edition of 1st Friday Crafts at Toltec Mounds ArcheologicaScott is Aug. 5. Participants make and take home an assortment of American Indian games. After each game, park interpreters teach attendees how to play. All materials for the workshop are provided. Reservations are required and space is limited. Hours are 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in the park visitor center and admission is $5 per person. Additional information is available by calling 501-961-9442. The park is located at 490 Toltec Mounds Road.

A good movie and an indoor pool with a water park – what a way to spend a summer evening in Arkansas! On Friday, Aug. 5, Jacksonville’s Splash Zone hosts Toy Story 3 and offers extended after-hours swimming. The movie begins at sundown. Splash Zone hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Concession stand available until 9 p.m. Splash Zone admission is $4 per person, $1 for the slides; the movie is free. Spend a "HOT AUGUST NIGHT" with the Top of the Rock Chorus at the Argenta Community Theater on Aug. 6. The program promises an evening of “dazzling costumes, sizzling choreography, with beautiful barbershop harmonies…that appeals to all ages.” The event begins at 3 p.m. with an admission of $15 for senior citizens and students, $20 for the general public. The Jacksonville Community Center is where the 26th Annual Arkansas Book & Paper Show takes place Aug. 13-14. The event has special displays and offerings by book or paper dealers from throughout the U.S. and authors signing and discussing their latest tomes. Items included are antiquarian, leather bound, rare, books with fine bindings, first editions, bargain, history fact and fiction, and Civil War. Other topics covered are biographies, children's, cooking, self help, and fiction and non-fiction books. Two star-gazing events take place the weekend of Aug. 20-21 at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. A Star Party on Aug. 20 allows visitors to join amateur astronomers at the visitor center for an evening with the stars and other celestial phenomena. The Central Arkansas Astronomical Society provides telescopes for viewing objects in the night sky as twilight settles in. If cloudy skies prevent observation, an indoor program on astronomy will be presented at 9 p.m. Admission is free; meet at the park visitor center at 11901 Pinnacle Valley Road in west Little Rock.

Sunday, Aug. 21, brings A Star-Gazing Lake Cruise. Visitors view the stars while cruising aboard the park tour boat on Lake Maumelle near Pinnacle Mountain. A park interpreter serves as pilot and guide to learn about stars, constellations, and satellites in the sky. Advance reservations and payment required of $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Meet at the Jolly Roger Marina, 11800 Maumelle Harbor Road. Get ready for the upcoming hunting seasons by attending the Arkansas Outdoors Expo, Aug. 20-21 in Conway. Billed as “Arkansas’s only major hunting and fishing show scheduled directly before the start of the state’s most popular hunting seasons," the show features hundreds of outdoor vendors. Also on the agenda are a jam-packed weekend of events including the Arkansas State Duck Calling Competition, a 3D archery tournament, the Ultimate Air Dogs dock dog jumping, and the Arkansas Great Steak Cook-Off. Multiple seminars and demonstrations from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Ducks Unlimited and Outdoor Channel outfitters also take place. Jacksonville’s Back to School Bash makes the beginning of the new school year a little easier to face. On Aug. 26, those ages 13–18 (ID required for 16-18) can join Power 92’s Tre Day to dance the night away. Concessions are available. If you’ve wanted to learn about or get involved in geocaching, then make plans to attend Pinnacle Mountain State Park’s Geocaching Weekend. Dates are Aug. 27-28. Scheduled programs and activities are designed to introduce novices to the Arkansas State Park’s geocache tour. Geocaches found at the park are explored and explained. August 27-28 are the dates for The Battle of Reed’s Bridge Civil War Re-Enactment in Jacksonville. In addition to the re-enactment of the skirmish, there is musical entertainment, a Saturday night dance, three sutlers (a person who maintained a store on an army post) and a blacksmith. There is also a second-hand re-enactor store for those wanting to buy and/or sell their equipment. Crafters and food vendors are also on site. The Reed’s Bridge Homestead and Battlesite is on Ark. 161 in Jacksonville.
