Select the country and object's type "Lost Connections" - the works of Monique Janssen - Belitz at the Las Cruces Museum of Art

Las Cruces, NM - Currently showing at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, "Lost Connections" is an exhibition of works on paper by Albuquerque artist Monique Janssen-Belitz.

Janssen-Belitz is a native of the Netherlands who studied in Germany and moved to the United States in 1985. She relocated to Albuquerque in 2007 and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from the University of New Mexico. Her works are held in both public and private collections.

According to the artist, she sees land as a "palimpsest" - in essence old life can be seen under the new. She is ". . . interested in bringing light to our common humanity, and making visible the spiritual and cultural connections tying the past into the present, informing the future."

Too large to be framed, many of Ms. Janssen-Belitz's works are pinned to the gallery walls. Tears and creases in the paper are inevitable. To the artist this "...demonstrates the transience and fragility of everything that exists while also marking the paper with a new record of its life as a shared cultural object. The absence of preciousness emphasizes the flow of time that is constantly renewed and open to change."

The exhibition closes on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

The Las Cruces Museum of Art is located at 491 N. Main Street next to Branigan Cultural Center. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 9:00 AM to 4:30PM. The Museum is closed Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call (575) 541-2137 or visit the website www.las-cruces.org/museums.
